Hoover Junior 119 switch broken
I have picked up a couple of these machines locally and intend to restore.
The first (and youngest) is shown below. Having now partially dismantled all looks OK except the off on switch - which is operated by a foot pedal. I am completely new to these machines. I read another post on the forum which mentioned the switch as a weak point. I don't want to dismantle the whole thing if there is no chance of mending this switch at all. If that is the case I'll just put an in line switch into the cord or on the handle. If there is a likely cure I'll bite the bullet and pull the lot apart. Any advice from any memebrs with experience of this machine appreciated. Many thanks. Kneale |

Re: Hoover Junior 119 switch broken
Beneath the foot pedal is a push on-push off switch; you don't say whether the bakelite pedal or the switch itself is broken. If it's the switch itself you may be able to adapt a current switch to fit; if it's the pedal maybe with Millput you could reconstruct it.
By the way I've got some new spare belts and a new spare armature for this model if you're stuck. If memory serves the model was re-numbered 1224 when lighter colours and 4 figure model numbers came in. |

Re: Hoover Junior 119 switch broken
Many thanks,
Definitely says model 119 on the plate. It is the switch which is open circuit. Kick plate seems fine - certainly externally. How do I dismantle the kick plate / switch assembly? Many thanks indeed, Kneale |

Re: Hoover Junior 119 switch broken
The blue and white models from the factory were definitely 1224 models, having said that there was nothing to stop anyone changing a few parts to make it into a 1224.
Great cleaners I use on upstairs in my house. The whole motor switch housing comes away from the front metal housing (4 screws I think), once you have done this you should be able to see how it comes apart, it is so many years since I did mine I cannot remember, but rest assured as they mass produced by hand they went together and came aprt easily. Good luck, worth the effort Gary |

Re: Hoover Junior 119 switch broken
Hi, on some of the early juniors the red switch lever could be carefully pried out from the top, revealing the switch and a nut on the switch bush that held the whole lot in.

Re: Hoover Junior 119 switch broken
Many thanks to you both. Now have the switch off. As Ed stated a gentle lever from the top got it.
Confirmed as essentially broken. Randomly conducts with variable resistance but mainly OC on all presses. Very solid switch. I certainly haven't got anything I could put in it's place. I have to leave this tonight but might try drilling out the sealed switch unit tomorrow to see if there is anything I can do to repair. Again help appreciated. Kneale |

Re: Hoover Junior 119 switch broken
Not played with these for many a year but I would be surprised if you could not find a new one, there were loads of firms selling genuine and pattern spares.

Re: Hoover Junior 119 switch broken
Try running lots switch cleaner in where the button is. Keep it upright and keep operating it by hand. Try several times and it may work. Check with a meter. Might just be a lazy switch mechanically after a period of non use. Let it dry out before applying mains.

Re: Hoover Junior 119 switch broken
That looks a lot like the foot-operated buttons used on some musical effects boxes. Something like that with a suitable rating shouldn't be too hard to find.

Re: Hoover Junior 119 switch broken
Again all help appreciated. I sprayed switch cleaner yesterday evening and retried the switch today. Working perfectly!
Now cleaned and rebuilt. Working very effectively. Will have a look at the older one in due course as it would fit better in my workshop, where I want to use it. If not serviceable I'll use this one. Plan to buy set of tools. All in all a lot of fun and education for £5. Nice to bring a classic old household device back to life. Kneale |

Re: Hoover Junior 119 switch broken
Hi Kneale, suggest calling Jacks Repair Center in South Harrow, should you require any parts.
Has helped me over the years with new and second hand spares when I am restoring old Hoovers etc. Good Luck - Mike Last edited by mike_newcomb; 13th Oct 2016 at 6:02 pm. Reason: Correction |
