Hi again, I have now gotten both circuit diagrams for the Philcoradio but the valve line-up has been changed and the bases have been wired to suit. What line-up would would be easiest to get if I need valves .Would anyone be good enough to send me a valve location in relation to the chassis. It would be very much appreciated. Dick.

Default Pilot lamp value in Philco 48-2810 radio

Hello again, Would anyone be able to tell me the value of the pilot lamp in the 48-2810 radio or if it can be bypassed if this value s not available. Thanks again, Dick.

Hello Dick,

The schematic for this set is available to download on the radiomuseum web site but it doesn't indicate the rating of the pilot lamp.

https://www.radiomuseum.org/r/philco_48_2810.html

Normally it is possible to work out the rating of the lamp from the circuit but there is a drawing error on the schematic associated with the lamp that confuses things. Are there not any markings on the old lamp?

Is the lamp wired in parallel with a dropper resistor in the heater chain? If so, what is the value in ohms of that resistor?

On a similar Philco I have somewhere in the loft the pilot lamp is wired across the filament tap of the rectifier. (35Y4)

On that set it was a No 47 lamp which was rated at 6.5V 0.15A

It may be the same on this set.

Cheers

Hello,
The radiomuseum entry suggests it is a 35Y4 rectifier and if so this is correct then according to this https://frank.pocnet.net/sheets/049/3/35Y4.pdf it uses a No40 or No47 dial lamp. From this http://www.radiodaze.com/dial-lamps/ both No40 or No47 dial lamps are 6.3V 0.15A.
The situation is slightly complex because the anode current usually passes through the dial lamp so if the anode current is over 50 or 60 ma then you need a resistor in paraallel with the lamp. https://www.radiomuseum.org/tubes/tube_35z5gt.html The 35Z5 is basically the same tube with an octal base.

Not knowing parts availability there for a #47 lamp, I have one I can send you, NOS for the cost of shipping.

In view of what Mike T has posted I have re-visited the circuit and decided that perhaps there is not an error. It is where the rectifier takes its anode connection that looks odd but it is possibly done to keep the HT down for the American valve design.

The miniature lamps made in the US had a colored bead that designated the type, blue bead #44, brown bead #47.
When I restore a set of this type, I install a 1 watt 220 to 330 ohms across pins 2&3 of the 35Z5 to preserve the valve.

Default Philco Radio 48-2810 question

Hi again, Is there any way that I can substitute readily available valves to get my Philcoradio working again, or is that a very stupid question. Dick.

The first 2 are B8B loctal base 14S7 & 7B7, the rest are Octal, 12Q7, 50L6, 35Z4
Though some are not common you should be able to buy them all.
There are not many equivalent numbers for these series 150mA heater valves.
You could convert it to parallel heaters and use 6.3v valves with a transformer.
But why do you want a set of valves, they are usually very reliable. How do you know that it is only the valves that you need? What is wrong with set?

Hello again friends, My problem is that I can follow a schematic very well, but, when I wind up with a deviation of valves with different heater and other connections I loose confidence. Not having a background in anything electric or having anyone personally to ask I hope you can see my plight. I love your forum and I do not scare easily.

We are still friends Boater Sam. Dick.

Hi again, The valve lineup is as follows 35y4, 35l6, 12q7 , no number, and14s7.The mains dropper is open circuit and the pilot light is blown. If I try it on 110voltswill I have to bridge the pilot light with something to create a circuit.? Dick.
