Akai X330 Reel to Reel motor adjust
I'm sure you've read and know why I'm here. The motor in my X330 is very slightly slow. Slow enough to notice a chance in pitch. The manual has no information on how to adjust it at all or how to calibrate it. All it has is a set of instructions on verifying the correct speed. The deck has had a lot of work done but this is new. Especially on a 3 motor deck.

You will probably find that the phase split capacitor has dried out.
It's essential the same value is used, otherwise you will have other speed problems. Joe |

Re: Akai X330 Reel to Reel motor adjust
The FFW and Rewind is also weak as it comes towards the end. When I mean weak, it sometimes comes to a stand still without pulling all the tape through. each reel has its own motor.. Do i need to recap those as well or what's the take on them?

You should check/replace the motor run capacitors for both reel motors and the capstan motor if its an AC motor. (I dont have the manual for it)

Re: Akai X330 Reel to Reel motor adjust
I think this machine has a 3 speed synchronous motor for the capstan drive (I could be wrong about that)
If so it is unlikely to be the motor start cap as the motor probably would not run at all. If it is running slow it is possible that there is a switching problem on the speed change switch and not all the poles are being correctly connected. In addition it seems unlikely that the spool motor caps are both faulty so are you sure that the tape path is clean and that all the rollers are free - excessive drag could cause both your problems. (If there is a known motor cap problem with this machine I apologise) |

Here is a copy of the motor schematic, before I go about replacing any caps.

Re: Akai X330 Reel to Reel motor adjust
The 50 / 60 Hz switch will affect spool motor torque, I doubt it would affect the speed of the capstan motor though.

Re: Akai X330 Reel to Reel motor adjust
I've circled the three motor run capacitors that need to be replaced.
