Akai 4000DS rubber spool holders
Hi just having problems with the two rubber bungs that hold the spools on well there not holding.
Just wondering if anyone has had this problem and what to do to repair them i have just ordered some Rubber Renew just to see if that will soften up the rubber if anyone has any ideas i would love to hear them. Barry. |

Back in the 70’s we just used rubber grommets.

I realise that this suggestion is very inelegant, but when I owned an Akai 4000DS that had that problem, I resorted to spring-loaded washing line pegs! The wooden ones were best; plastic ones kept falling off. (All down to a matter of friction, of course).

A round rubber door stop, the one with a hole in the middle for attaching to a floor or wall. It's been a long time since I used them for this. They may need the hole slightly enlarged.

If you still have the originals and from your post it looks like you do, a cable tie wrapped around the top part and then pulled tight with pliers worked well for me. If you use black ties, you can't really see it, either.

You should be able to improve the tightness of the existing rubber things by squeezing them in a bit. I have used strong 'steel split key rings' for this purpose. Available eBay. It depends on the size and shape of the rubbers but you need to find rings that are a tight fit and file a slight groove in the rubber first to locate the ring. Alternatively a stout O ring glued on with superglue might do the job.
