Re: I hate Steampunk AVOs
Suspenders are the belts that hold up ladies silk stockings. Generally frilly and lacy affairs. I have no doubt that some "men" wear them, but none of my acquaintance.
One uses a trouser belt to keep ones knickers and possibly suspender belt from public gaze. Another option is "braces" which is what you have pictured. |

Re: I hate Steampunk AVOs
Don't worry Aitor. This is one of those entertaining differences between British and American English. American "suspenders" = British "braces", for holding up trousers.
And as has been mentioned, British "suspenders" are for holding up stockings. I think the Americans call this a "garter belt". |

Re: I hate Steampunk AVOs
My English is not very good, but I must admit that I can understand and speak better in England than in USA. I Remember a few years ago in Michigan, it was very difficult for me to speak with the Americans.

Aitor, it isn't just you. Every user of the Queen's English has difficulty communicating with Americans! Two nations divided by a common language? No, it is just that they mangle English because they can!
Your English is fine and certainly far better than the Spanish skills that many of us Brits have. |

Aitor. Just to confuse you more, nickthedentist has a different use for braces.

Re: I hate Steampunk AVOs
A Steampunk lamp could become a lamp limiter. I think I’d still hate it though.

Re: I hate Steampunk AVOs
Maybe a combined lamp limiter and still-functional bench multimeter, Jim?

Re: I hate Steampunk AVOs
I guess that this one was inspired by the film Brazil.

Re: I hate Steampunk AVOs
It's just lacking the Fresnell lens, Peter. But to compensate they've put what looks like a Mamod steam engine and the remains of an iambic paddle morse key on the other (looks like a vibroplex brass racer - triangular version. At what they're worth that must be a wealthy steampunk)

Re: I hate Steampunk AVOs
Ooo Errr, I think I'm going to get blamed for this!
As an aside, Vibroplex were the makers of the original mechanical paddle type Morse key. Shove the paddle to the left and a mass-spring oscillator wobbled and two contacts sent a string of dots for you (move the mass to change the speed) let go and oscillation was stopped. Move the paddle right and another contact made so you could form dashes manually. Only the dots were automated. Vibroplex used a raised metal effigy of a beetle as their logo on all their keys. Consequently they got nick-named "Bug Keys" and this has sort of hooverised into a generic name for any automatic key. Vibroplex keys of the original sort are now collector-fodder. Eddystone made their own version which is particularly sought after. David

Re: I hate Steampunk AVOs
Today I witnessed an unsuccessful attempt to sell half an Amethyst Geode that was trailing a power cable and a 13 amp plug. Now these crystal formations are renowned for *promoting fertility and healing your crown chakra, so who knows what effects mounting an LED in the back of one could have. It could all get a bit inter-dimensional and John Carpenter-esque.

Re: I hate Steampunk AVOs
There was the old saying that if it stands still, paint it. Seems like the current equivalent is if it's inanimate, screw on a light fitting, a bulb and a chintzy shade.
I'm making sure I keep moving. David

I think it goes something like:
If it moves, salute it. If it doesn't, paint it white. |

Re: I hate Steampunk AVOs
I always considered the original Vibroplex concept to be a horrible thing: It sent dots at a fixed rate [set by the springs] but dashes were left to be timed by the operator.
Fine for line-telegraphy, but on HF radio channels, where propagation conditions were continually changing, it made no sense. You might get a few minutes where the channel was good and you could do 20WPM but a few minutes later you could be in a deep fade which was only workable at 5WPM with loads of retries. Being stuck with your dot-spring-setting at 12WPM meant you couldn't go-faster when the channel was good or slow-down-to-a-crawl when it faded. QLF? Are you sending with your left foot?? |

Re: I hate Steampunk AVOs
Having similar problem with my relatively modern rig. I have to go into a menu to argue with the keyer speed.
