Re: Operating instructions Philips PM5518
Hello Andrew
Please find attached a copy of the Keyboard/Display Unit and parts list for the Philips PM55** series colour TV pattern generators. I have also attached PDF copies of the display driver IC, type MM5450 and the LED display unit type LTM8328. Please note that the service manual quotes two different LED display modules LTM8639 and (LTM8328), so it may be wise to check the pcb layout on the keyboard display board and compare the dimensions and mountings first. The data sheets were downloaded from http://www.datasheetarchive.com/, as there are a number of manufactures please check that I have posted the correct data sheets for your unit. Parts may still be available from “Philips Scientific & Industrial” there is an address in the manual I have but it may be out of date by now, if you contact Philips I would recommend that you quote the ordering code on the parts list. There is no part number quoted for the Teletext module Unit 4, only the individual parts. I am sure you will be able to obtain the parts for the display from the various suppliers on the Internet, but the Teletext module may have to be obtained from Philips or from a scrap or non-working unit. I hope this information is of some help. Regards Stan.

Re: Operating instructions Philips PM5518
Thanks Stan for the information.
I've gone down a similar route to you in regards to looking at using the MM5450 and variants but they are 35 bit and not 34bit devices so I'm unsure if they will work correctly. Philips only sold individual components for the teletext card. If they still supply spares, all I need are the two PROM chips and the rest I can make up myself. I'll look into it. Thanks again, Andrew |

Re: Operating instructions Philips PM5518
Hello hanspeter
The only information on how to set up the VPS data that I can find is in the supplement to the PM5518TXI Operating Manual, pages E3-9 to E3-10. I have already scanned this and posted a copy of it as a PDF attachment to post 18 above. The manual also has the same section in German, which I can scan if it would be of any help. Regards Stan.

Re: Operating instructions Philips PM5518
Hello Albert
I have a part copy of the PM 5518 service manual, which I have scanned from my own copy and a poor full copy I downloaded from the Internet. Please see attached PDF files of the parts I have scanned so far. I you would like a full copy you will have to send me an email as it is far too large to post on the forum. Regards Stan.

Re: Operating instructions Philips PM5518
Thanks everyone for all the useful info. I also had a display module fault, and as of Nov 2014 the LED module is still available. The one I got solved the problem other than its legs were slightly wider than the original so I had to drill out the board.

Re: Operating instructions Philips PM5518
Was it available under the original part number or an equivalent number and where from? I'm interested in getting a proper replacement since the originals seem to die once they age and making up a replacement based on the MM5450 is messy.

Re: Operating instructions Philips PM5518
I ordered from Mouser using the chip number given above in the post of 24th Dec 2010. Just put that in the mouser search and it will come up. The chip is nominally about £6 but with all the extras it comes finally to about £22.

Thanks, I don't remember it being stocked back in 2010 so I'm glad to see they are available again.

Re: Operating instructions Philips PM5518
Hi guys... Im just back from a holiday and seen this post...Andrew you don't say what the original fault is...or was....I recently serviced a 5518 and found that the major issue was the poor coating of the edge connectors of the modules. This is "tinned" rather than gold, so Philips weren't expecting them the be serviced often. If the modules are not placed EXACTLY, due to the gaps between the connectors being small, the connectors can touch it neighbour. This is a problem if the guides at the ends are broken.....

Re: Operating instructions Philips PM5518
My original problem was that I was missing the display module (just the LTM8328). Since then I have obtained a parts PM5515 which provided me with the teletext module I needed as well as the display module. The only hitch is that one segment is dead on the display module, it's usable but annoying!
