What a wonderful set, looks pretty unmolested too.
I must admit it is tempting, +27% on top of the winning bid sadly puts me out of the running
I hope it stays in this country & gets lovingly restored.

Some say, from 1939. Anybody got more information... Peter?

Well it doesn't appear in the 1938 brochure but I don't know the date for the brochure it does appear in, although I suspect it was 1939. The 4046 appears in the 1938 brochure at 43 guineas and again at 43 guineas along with the 4045.

The first post war Pye tellies used numbers 4xxx, in 1938 they switched to 8xx (and changed yet again in 1939).

The 4xxx models do seem to be in chronological order, so given the 4046 is sep '37 or earlier (it is mentioned in Wireless World for 3rd Sep '37 ), then so is the 4045. I think it's likely the one in the auction is indeed a 4045, or just maybe a 4042. I dont think there were any new Pye mirror lids in 1938 or 1939

TTFN,
Jon

PS: Wonder if they ever sold any 4043's as they are truely hideous.

WW Olympia report for 1938 doesn't mention the 4045 or 4046 and the 1939 report describes different model numbers as below.

There is a photo of the rear of the 4045 in 3rd Sept 1937 WW and it certainly looks very similar to the rear view of the auction set.

Like. As in pressed on a non-available 'like' button but otherwise takes up loads more space.

For anyone interested, the Pye fetched £4,200 plus fees.

It wasn't me who won the set although my bid was the same. Those present at the auction take precedence over internet bidders. However, the Lady I spoke to today informed me that the set was sold to a TV collector.

That's really hard luck David. I think everyone here (with the possible exception of the winning bidder) hoped that you'd won it. I hope the winner is a member of one of the forums and we can learn more about it.

It would certainly be very interesting to follow the restoration of the set.
Making a reproduction back would be a task in itself, let alone the electronics.

Hi Mark,
Well if the back is similar to the Pye 838 then making a replica shouldn't be all that difficult. In fact I made a back for the owners of another 838.
Mine had received the attention of woodworms and it'll be noted that the top left side had to have a new piece of plywood grafted in.

Hi David,
If anyone had one, it had to be you
Shame that you did not win the set, I guess that there can't be many survivors.
I wonder where it was stored all these years?

I was wondering if it belonged to the late Brian Cuff as he lived nearby. Was anyone familiar with his collection?

Hi ian. I doubt bit was Brian's as we would probably heard of it before and the bvws handled the disposal of his collection through a number of bvws auctions and events.

Cheers.
