405 line video of Test Card C recorded on JVC3320
This recording shows the definition available for 405 line operation on VHS. The stability at the top of the scan is a bit wobbly but the drop-out performance of the old 3320 is pretty good. You will see that I'm cheating slightly with both buttons pressed in on the Sony 9-90 i.e. this is 405 UHF. You might need to select 1080 HD on your Youtube player settings.

I've added a second half showing the same recording played back on a Panasonic NV FS90B. More stable but worse on drop-outs.

Interesting "pulsating picture size" effect, but very good results with the JVC VCR.
ISTR that early production Ferguson 3V29s (a badge engineered version of the JVC JVC HR-7200EK) performed well when recoding 405 lines (but not the later modified design). Has the flywheel line sync time constant been modified to improve horizontal stability on your TV9-90UB? Last edited by dazzlevision; 15th Sep 2021 at 1:21 pm. |

Great picture Peter. I recorded a number of 405 tapes when CP was still on air. They have survived very well. I used a Ferguson 3V29 with the video taken from a single transistor emitter follower from the video output valve [PFL200] of a Bush TV166. John.

Re: 405 line video of Test Card C recorded on JVC3320
Thanks for your replies folks. I'm guessing that the pulsating is a function of the damping (or lack of it) on the head drum speed servo. It only shows in playback on the 3320 and not when playing back on the FS90B.
I also tried playing the tape into a television that has 3MHz bandwidth but if there was any signal there it was very faint. My 9-90 has just the standard circuitry. Were you running your TV166 from an isolation transformer John? Peter. Last edited by peter_scott; 15th Sep 2021 at 3:33 pm. |

Yes Peter I placed it on the end of my workbench and just left it running till the tapes ended. For some reason there was very little ITV.
Towards the end, ITV was terrible! I phoned and spoke to one of the transmitter guys. He said that I could have no sound with jumbled vision or a massive hum bar! The BBC transmission was 100% to the end. I still have the TV166 [640] but I'm certain I removed the emitter follower bit of Veroboard. I always thought it was amazing that an unmodified 3V29 could record system A with such quality! Regards, John. PS Yes isolation transformer in use! The "problem" with the Sony 9-90UB Peter, is that it's too good, and not representative of a other vintage sets.
It's able to mask symptoms like the inevitable off-tape timing errors, and mine even seems to display a proper interlaced picture from a graphics card, without any help from your corrector circuit.
