Default "Tannoy": can you clarify?

Hi I am a little confused as to the term "Tannoy". I am pretty green when it comes to the finer points of our hobby and had always thought Tannoy to be a generic description of loudspeaker systems in factories and stations and the like, but I have seen vintage equipment marked with the name as though it was a maker or brand name. Is this a similar thing to describing all Vacuum cleaners as "Hoovers" or any ball point pens as a "biro", or am I missing something?
All the best from Bill.

Just google them and you will find a superb range of loudspeakers that you certainly really have been missing. Probably one of the UK's most successful ever Hi Fi Compnies. It's quite amazing that you were not aware of them! Edward

I have used Tannoy speakers for about 20 years.
I have one of the smallest sets that they made in the Gold Monitor series.
They are superb, even if I did need to fit new surrounds.

I wish I had Westminster Royals, but I dont have 40,000 pounds Sterling + and thats NOT a typo.
I will stay with my 1968 Cheviot speakers that STILL put 99% of modern speakers outside the line.

p.s. PLEASE go have a listen !!!

I just visited the Australian distributor website.

http://audioactive.com.au/tannoy-gol...rence-upgrade/

This is "copied and pasted"
Tannoy GR Stirling: $7,999 per pair
Tannoy GR Turnberry: $12,299 per pair
Tannoy GR Kensington: $22,000 per pair
Tannoy GR Canterbury: $34,999 per pair
Tannoy GR Westminster: $59,999 per pair
Tannoy GR Kingdom Royal: $79,999 per pair
Tannoy GR Kingdom Royal Carbon Black: $99,999 per pair

Just to add insult to injury the REAL average yearly income in Australia is about $50,000
BEFORE TAX !!!!!!!!!
Go figure

So that's why rail tickets are so expensive in Britain... all those railway stations with upwards of a dozen Tannoy speakers each.

I can't help feeling that hyper-speakers are designed primarily for price points so that the man with $199,999.99 speakers can look down on the man with only $99,999.99 ones.

As a born mischief maker, I'd love to find out whether real-life owners could tell them apart without visual clues.

As the original question has been answered and we are heading towards the esoteric land of Audiophoolia and other silliness it's time to make the final announcement.
