Default Pye 18A, what type of resisistor is this?

All I know as per the data sheet for my Pye !8 A is that this is a 3000 ohm H.T. Smoothing Capacitor.

What type of resistor is this and what type of resistor can I replace it with as I have searched high and low for something similar in shape and size.

Thank you.

looks like a wirewound vitreous enamel jobbie. Do you know the wattage (should be in the service sheet)

(PS it's 8W)

Farnell do one here

You could get a more authentic looking one from mouser:

Is it actually O/C? probably 10 watt by its size. More important to change are those incontinent waxies below your 8uf cap. J.

Thanks Kevin, it didn't state the wattage on my sheet.

The waxies are on their way out; have replaced most of them now apart from one than has gone missing (C23 according to data sheet)!!

Thanks J just checked again with meter and now have a reading of 3.080; another lesson learnt, check and check again!!

These vitreous enamelled resistors are usually pretty much indestructible if not mechanically abused, the fine wire in high-value types can eventually go open-circuit after decades occasionally but otherwise they'll be soldiering on when everything else around them has gone to the pearly gates! Their toughness does mean that they have a good power rating for their size, but it also means that they are often run searingly hot and need to be positioned clear of insulated wire and other components.

Also be aware that if you remove the resistor and then refit it, if the wires are short the solder making the new connections may melt.

Mike
Perhaps there is a use for lead-free solder after all
