Default Weird, oddball sets that you may not have seen..

Y'know how it is as a long term vintage radio collector, you kinda think you've most if not 'all' of the sets around. Ha, how wrong could that thought be?! I'll kick off with this one, a Philips 964AS. What strange, oddball, interesting, maybe rare sets are you aware of?

Ooh, I like that one!

I have a 'Raleigh Electronic' radio here, which I thought was quite unusual, it's in a black and green plastic case, which was moulded in sections and glued together. The green bits have faded to nearly white, but if you stick a light inside it, it shows up the green nicely!

Regards,
Lloyd.

Hi

I like the look of that 964AS. I doubt if it was marketed in the UK, appears to be a 2 valve plus rectifier TRF set with reaction from about 1930.

My favourite oddball one is the French SNR Excelsior 55. I have one in the "to do" category, but it's already smart enough to be allowed in the house.

Scott-Taggart's home constructor designs seem fairly scarce after 85 years, so this ST900 may be unfamiliar to some folk at least. The tuning dial must be among the largest to feature on a table radio, and its slow motion drive is as simple as it looks, the big chrome disc to which the pointer is attached engages with the spindle of the knob to its right. To change between MW and LW, just lift the lid off and exchange both coils.

Doubt it myself, but we also had sets with identical circuits, e.g. the Marconi 246.

I like that Philips - great shape !
The most unusual one I ever found, in a local auction too, was this Psychon P500.
I passed it on when I was 'told' I had too many sets.
Not sure of the year....

Almost "snap!", but not quite. I couldn't resist becoming this one's custodian.

Not an "unseen" as I used to have one but the RAP 646 always struck me as very odd and strange looking [just a matter of opinion I know!] So much so that I gave it away to a friend, who picked it out specially but I'm not so sure now. If anyone can post an image [as Graham has kindly done on my R1155/Lancaster Bomber thread] I would be most grateful but if it has to be a "set unseen" don't bother)

I've never come across Raleigh Electronic Industries Ltd. A quick Google didn't bring up any relevant results either.

Can you post a photo of the radio's innards, please?

Maybe it was an import or a "one hit wonder"?

Thanks for that, very interesting. The manufacturer remains a mystery company......

The rarest set I have in my collection is a Yacht radios made by the Aeronautical Radio & Telephone Company of Great Poutney Street London. It runs off of a 12v car battery and uses a rotary converter to supply the HT and 13v valves in parallel. The valve line up is FC13C, VP1321, VP1321 & PENDD 1360.

It covers LW, MW, TB & SW and has Ex Speaker and Gram PU sockets and slow motion tuning.

Trevor.

Here's another one weird one. It's a Zenith Royal 16 transistor set. It opens like a clam shell and is shaped to drop easily into a pocket just like a wallet, hence the nickname 'Billfold' set.
