Television set in 1939 film
Here's the 'television' seen in the 1939 film, as recently reported in the letters column of the BVWS Bulletin.
It doesn't look very convincing, but did any pre-war sets have a cabinet like this? Steve |

Re: Television set in 1939 film
The perfectly square edges that don't quite match the frame look like a matte shot, which isn't surprising given the difficulties in filming an actual TV screen convincingly.
I suppose the set is supposed to be a projection jobby. Do you have the name of the film?

Re: Television set in 1939 film
The television screen image is completely square with the frame of the film where it should be transformed to a parallelogram shape. I think it's just a rather poor simulation of a television set. I also think the suggestion in the Bulletin that it might be the first appearance of a working television in film is highly unlikely. For example the 1936 film "Television Comes to London" has a simulated image on a television monitor screen.

I believe there are simulated television 'pictures' in several episodes of 'Flash Gordon'. J.

Two other films of the period with 'television' displays that come to mind:
"Things To Come" (1936). "Band Waggon" (1940) where we even see Jasmine Bligh on the screen! |
