Philips 170A cabinet finishing
Hi. I met someone recently who has a Philips 170A radio, it has some fine hairline cracks on its cabinet (not usually visible), but can be seen during daylight. What Humbrol paint mix can anyone suggest to disguise these cracks (rather than re-spraying the whole cabinet) please?

Re: Philips 170A cabinet finishing
Its a matter of suck it and see once dry for colour match but the biggest problem is that any phsyical imprefection is made more obvious by applying paints etc. Don't forget that as paint dries, it shrinks so need several coats to build up, but also needs to be rubbed back down in between.
If the imperfections are in the base coat rather than the protective lacquer then touching up is not the answer! |

Re: Philips 170A cabinet finishing
Hi. Many thanks for the replies. The 170A bakelite cabinet has a plum coloured finish, and I have tried various experiments on my own radio. The Humbrol paint mix that comes anywhere near this colour is number 7 (black), and number 20 (red), both gloss. With any luck, it should be o.k.

Re: Philips 170A cabinet finishing
Hi. Just a correction, Humbrol have changed their paint numbers, Black gloss is now number 21, not number 7 (old number).
