Default Mumetal

Hmm I think that's the correct name for it, where can you buy this for shielding mains transfomers etc?

Gary

Telcon Metals in Crawley used to be the supplier of Mumetal, but I am not sure if they still sell it these days.

Hi Folks, I got some for work for a magnetic shielding project about 6 months ago. I'll post address details tomorrow. Note that if you want to do any significant "work" to it, bending etc, it will lose some of its properties and will need to be re-annealed.
The company have it in a range of thicknesses from about 1 thou to 10 thou and it can easily be cut with scissors as well as being solderable.

Hello
I have contacted both of these companies but none have come back to me yet
Is mumetal a dodgy item to sell? ie used for bombs etc.
None of the big retail spares list it, though it does turn up on epay in other countries, and the amount I need is a small piece just to cover a mains transformer so maybe that's why the two companies are not interested.

Hi Gary, if it is a standard lamination size see if you can find a local transformer manufacturer. Ask him for a "shroud", or "soap dish" for your transformer. It is steel so will not be quite as good as mu metal

Hello Ed
I have been thinking of other ways to overcome this, I might just try shielding the pre-amp section with tin etc, If I could I would turn the transformer on its side etc but I haven't the room to do this.
I might have a rummage through my box of transfomers to see if any have mumetal on them.
Thanks
For your input on this

You can often find scrap oscilloscopes in the car boot section at a Radio Rally.
Generally if they are not working they will still be there at the end of the day, and the sellers will be open to almost any offers just to avoid having to take them back to the garage/shed. They usually have a mu-metal shield around the CR tube that can be recycled for other magnetic screening jobs.
