Ekco Manufacturing for Others
Some while ago I decided to set some parameters for the collection of radios, and determined upon Bakelite-only sets by Ekco, from their first use of the material until the end of WWII, 1945.
Recently, however, I've been toying with extending the criteria to include Bakelite sets made within the same dates by Ekco, but to be otherwise branded. I'm aware only of the Radio Rentals 157, 1934. Two questions please: - are there any other sets that fit the criteria? - what can I reasonably expect to pay for such sets? Many thanks. |

The moulding plant made bog seats, available in the Pye shops when I was an apprentice (1978 ish).

But could they be tuned to receive the Home Service?

Re: Ekco Manufacturing for Others
Do you mean complete sets made by Ekco, or cabinets made by them for manufacturers who used Ekco as a supplier of bakelite cabinets?

Possibilities for RF heating or clandestine loop aerials come to mind........

Re: Ekco Manufacturing for Others
There were loads of early Radio Rentals sets, actually, most of which will have been returned and destroyed, sadly.

Re: Ekco Manufacturing for Others
As Nick says there were many bakelite Radio Rental models made by Ekco - the pdf link given lists the various model numbers.
Amongst them is model 266 or AD266 which was an exact clone of the familiar AD65 round set, the only difference being the identification label on the back cover. I was fortunate enough to acquire an AD266 a few years ago which can be seen on the RMorg page I created for it here. Also, according to the book "Ekco Sounds" (ISBN 978-0-9570635-3-2), Ekco owned Ferranti as a subsidiary company and iconic sets like the Ferranti 145 "Jellymould" had their bakelite cabinets produced at Southend but were most likely married with their chassis at Ferranti in Manchester. I'm not 100% certain but believe I am correct in saying Ekco produced the domed bakelite cabinets for the various Philco People's set models as well. Regards |
