Default Roberts R871

I have a very clean lightly used R871 which is mainly used just for radio 4. Unfortunately it suddenly won't switch on. The green light won't light up. I've plugged ear phones in but can't hear anything. I no longer have a DC charger for it. Is it OK to use rechargeables?
Is it worth spraying a little electric contact spray around the switches?I know of 1 radio repair shop in Glasgow I can take it to . Before I do that any simple checks to carry out?
Thanks,
John
