Murphy type TR 901/ info?
Hi all
I'll be completely honest I do house clearances and often come across old radios and bits and bobs which I do sell on , however i do have a genuine interest in what I find and like to know as much as I can about the item. I have looked for information regarding this model but cannot find anything so any info would be appreciated. Many thanks Dave |

Re: Murphy type TR 901/ info?
It's definitely a bit or a bob rather than a radio. Might be an amplifier for public address audio distribution with an internal monitor speaker.
Can't find anything online at any rate. Any chance of internal pictures? What are the valves in it, if any? TR prefix could be a transmitter perhaps a mobile radio base station?

Looks like an amplifier, though TR could equal transmitter/receiver.
Very odd there is no info around. Welcome to the forum Dave!

I think Herald or Hamish may be getting close Dave. You're honesty and integrity is appreciated. If you have an ongoing interest, that's all that is needed to be a Forum member, so stay with it! People buy and sell here as well. We are always keen to view anything that turns up [like Time Team] and the expertise is amazing. My guess is that it's some sort of routing system [but a guess is all it is]. I'm pretty sure though that someone will know in the end. I suspect it's unlikely to be worth that much but again, you never know

Re: Murphy type TR 901/ info?
I suspect any value in the unit will be for some of the components. A good S/H GZ32 is worth a few pounds and the transformers (if their ratings can be determined) rather more. Since the top deck looks like RF stuff, the valves are not likely to be worth much, though it's worth a careful look to see what they are.
Realistic values for a lot of these parts can be found from Ebay "Sold Item" prices. As you're probably well aware, the asking prices can be meaningless.

Murphy VHF radio telephone base station (transmitter/receiver). Dates from the early 1960's
Used for things like base to mobile vehicle communications. Police, ambulance, taxi, despatch riders etc... Mike...

Re: Murphy type TR 901/ info?
The aerial socket on the back is the clue,it is a tx/rx (transmitter/receiver) and that socket is VHF.
PS The GZ32 looks quite creepy,as though it stands in an empty room.Just an observation.

My guesstimator still works, then....... Any idea whether it's hi- or lo-band? AM/FM, power, valve lineup? Presumably a single channel, rockbound job?

Re: Murphy type TR 901/ info?
There are strikes on the serial number plate.
L/H = Low High? and 1 2 5 from which can be made 12.5 or 25 for channel spacing? Just an idea. Valve kit of that age probably wasn't for 12.5k spacing is the problem. It would be 25 or 50kHz most likely. If you want it, you know where to look for it... I found it easily. Last edited by Jon_G4MDC; 11th Apr 2019 at 8:45 am. |

Re: Murphy type TR 901/ info?
But do the struck characters or the ones left unstruck represent the spec?

Re: Murphy type TR 901/ info?
I'd guess lowband, 1 channel. T could be channel spacing? Almost certainly unlicensable these days, so scrap value only.
