Indeed.
Worrying I must admit perhaps for some, I DO know when to stop but that may be because I don't have the cash to buy a lot of stuff.

Re: Perils Of Hoarding - Alarming Collectors Tale
That sure is some collection.
I once worked with someone who came in late to work one day with the following excuse. He was a hoarder of scrap electronics and a regular biffa sniffer, you name it, he collected it. At that time he had 3 rented garages full. On this occasion due to the weight of stuff he had stashed in the loft, it came through the ceiling into his bedroom. We weren't surprised.

Re: Perils Of Hoarding - Alarming Collectors Tale
Funny, maybe; tragic, certainly. The solution to his problem is one little word: "NO".
I'd be tempted to ask a few questions about his childhood, though. Al. |

Re: Perils Of Hoarding - Alarming Collectors Tale
Thats quite scary.. I thought I was getting bad, there's too much in the garage already (workshop!) and the loft is pretty full. I did start clearing out the complete rubbish! There's still an old 28" widescreen telly in the boot of my car, been there since we left work for the last time last december.. time for a clear out I think!

Re: Perils Of Hoarding - Alarming Collectors Tale
A pal of mine is rather like that guy.
He doesnt collect radios, but he does "aquire" almost anything mechanical. Apart from his house and garage, he has two rented garages, plus a 6,000 sq ft industrial unit for his "collection". When last I saw the latter, it was impossible to walk around as everywhere was filled to roof height. And I thought I was bad! |

Re: Perils Of Hoarding - Alarming Collectors Tale
Its good story but worrying, as I've started to insulate my double garden shed which is about 16 x 8 (feet that is!) and thats old to store the round to it pile!! I'm a bit of a hoarder too as I don't like to throw anything away!
I think its about time to stop collecting and start more repairing! Rob |

Re: Perils Of Hoarding - Alarming Collectors Tale
With me it's always "I need just two more items to complete my collection". It's quite obvious that even if I live to be 100 I'll never reach to bottom of the To Do pile and I have other projects apart from Vintage Radios.

Re: Perils Of Hoarding - Alarming Collectors Tale
Speak for yourself, David!
I keep telling myself I am not a collector. Everything I have (radios, radiograms and clocks) goes on the Tuit Pile and is eventually refurbed and either sold, given away or used in the house; if the latter's the case then something else has to go in its place. I've more interest in bringing something to life; once that's done, it is just another household item to be used.

Re: Perils Of Hoarding - Alarming Collectors Tale
Surely, the only mistake he made was to move house, so the time to use that word was when his wife made the suggestion of doing so.
If he'd stayed put, think how many containers he could have bought for the price he paid for shifting those two.

Re: Perils Of Hoarding - Alarming Collectors Tale
I have always considered that the feeling of satisfaction one gets in collecting is no different in the child that collects cheap badges etc to the rich man who collects rare Chinese porcelain etc.
Some folk have no desire at all to collect. Never have and never will. So are they mentally deficient in some way or are we, the collectors deficient? I do wonder at times. Richard. |

Re: Perils Of Hoarding - Alarming Collectors Tale
I do not believe that anyone who collects anything is, per se, 'deficient', or in any manner abnormal. It is when an interest - be this collecting, or anything else - grows to such a point that it has become detrimental to one's life, that of one's nearest and dearest or even a threat to the environment, that that 'interest' has become a problem. The greater the desire to accumulate & the size of the resulting accumulation determine that magnitude of the problem.
