Default Chassis Question

Can you buy 'U' shaped aluminium for DIY projects? About 6" across the top, 2" down the sides in various lengths. The stuff was a round on ebay to make DIY guitar amps and such. Used some to make a Mullard 3-3 on.
I haven't seen any of late. Maybe I am looking in the wrong place. All I have at the moment is the dismantled outer shell of a tower PC case. I thought it might come in handy sometime.

perhaps a supplier of structural metalwork?
That sounds a bit like a rolled or extruded channel section.
You may be able to score some offcuts/scrap for not too much?

A better description of just what you are looking for would be helpful. Perhaps a picture of the Mullard 3-3 amplifier?

The metal chassis I used for the 3-3 was originally supplied as a blank to make a guitar amplifier on. It is 2mm aluminium, which is a bit on the thick side if you aren't mounting the hefty transformers for a guitar amp.

While this is an Australian link https://www.ullrich.com.au/extrusions/channels it should give you an idea of what is available.

Somebody will know a UK supplier that should have much the same stuff.

One thing you will notice is the thickness of the stuff as the width and height size goes up.

A local sheet metal firm will willingly fold up a bit of ali for you, a neat drawing (a 3d dimensioned sketch is all they need) and "how much for cash" usually works. My last bit of bent metal about that size was less than a tenner (they got a tenner, keep 'em sweet).

I might be able to make what you want, I have 2mm and 0.75mm ali sheet, but Merlin's idea is a good one, my local ish aluminium supplier does this, they'd be able to do it cheaper than I could I think.

These guys:

have a range of extrusions that may be of use. I've bought aluminium tube/rod for antennas from them in the past.

I have some of those for a job, bought from bluebell audio in scotland, he has a website and the prices aren't too bad for bare chassis. They are pretty good.

You got there before me! I failed to remember the name Bluebell, and managed to find it in my shortcuts.

Bought chassis from them before - they are good guys.

A few years ago I kept having the same problem so took the plunge and bought a metal bending rig. I buy blank sheets of aluminium (even RS do them) and bend my own chassis. The bender is bulky to store and isn't used a lot but it is really useful for a variety of jobs. I remember that even good ol' Maplin used to supply ready made chassis in a couple of sizes.

The chassis I was looking at was around 11 quid or 16 if I wanted a base plate. Not bad really.
