Dynatron Henley RG33W radiogram
Hi all,
I've recently acquired a Dynatron Henley RG33W radiogram which contains a Garrard type AT6 Mark 2 turntable. I'm attempting to test it, but have no knowledge of these (I have read through the instruction manual, which the previous owner helpfully provided). The radiogram turns on but only functions if I hold down the required function button (e.g. I have to continuously hold the gram button down to keep power to the turntable, likewise with the vhf button for the fm radio). It plays fine, until I let go of the buttons. Any suggestions/guidance would be appreciated! Thanks |

Hi
Almost certainly the switches require cleaning with Servisol or other type of switch cleaner. This requires dismantling of the radio/amplifier section. You will also need to have the record player mechanism overhauled as it will probably be seized up due to dried up grease. I hope this helps you |

Hi Michael,
Thanks for your advice on the switches - I'll pick some cleaner up tomorrow. For the record player, the instructions mention sewing machine oil - is that still the best thing to use? |

If the buttons will not stay down, the latch on the mechanism needs freeing up with WD 40 or switch cleaner might do.

Re: Dynatron Henley RG33W radiogram
Sewing machine oil is ideal for use on the Garrard AT6 autochanger. Beware of a short cut by using WD40 as it will often disperse essential lubrication where it's needed - but it's ideal to free up seizures. Edward

Re: Dynatron Henley RG33W radiogram
I cleaned up the switch mechanism and the buttons hold down fine now. Unfortunately, I think I must have shorted out a circuit though as I now get no power to the radio! Any hints of where to start before I start tracing it all through with a multimeter?

Is the mains on/off one of the piano keys or on the volume control? Edward

Piano keys - it should turn on when pressing one of the functions (vhf or gram) and there is a separate off piano key.

I should also add that I believe there is power running through the new switches as they operate a bulb over the record player which switches on/off with these.

Maybe you have overspayed these and affected the latching functions? Edward

Re: Dynatron Henley RG33W radiogram
This is a valved radiogram chassis, if you are new to servicing these then certain precautions must be taken as there are high voltages within it.
There are certain parts, mainly capacitors which MUST be replaced. I think the light on these radiogram is mains operated. Does the light still light when the off key is pressed? If so then it has nothing to do with the mains on/off switch. You need the service manual, available here, and you must proceed with caution. |

Re: Dynatron Henley RG33W radiogram
Thanks both for your responses.
Michael - where is the service manual document you mention available from? It is indeed a valved radiogram, but the light does switch off with the off piano switch |

Re: Dynatron Henley RG33W radiogram
There's reference to a model RG33 here, but it has no 'W' suffix. Uses piano keys though, so may be the same model.

Re: Dynatron Henley RG33W radiogram
I dont think the W has any significance for the service manual purpose

Re: Dynatron Henley RG33W radiogram
you need to be sure of the model number. RG33 does not appear to be the "Henley"

Re: Dynatron Henley RG33W radiogram
I based the model name/number on the documents that came with it. Does anyone know if it's stamped on these radiograms anywhere?

Re: Dynatron Henley RG33W radiogram
I'll try to work out the exact model tonight.
One thing I found was that the internal fuse has blown after I cleaned the switches. Should it be replaced with a fast blow or time delay/antisurge fuse? |

Re: Dynatron Henley RG33W radiogram
Assuming it's the original, the type and rating will be engraved on one of the end caps.

Re: Dynatron Henley RG33W radiogram
It definitely appears to be a Henley RG33W (see attached).
