Default Dansette Bermuda MK II ??

I was given this player for Christmas and have been trying to identify the model. It is marked Dansette but has no model name visible but has a serial no of 008329 and fitted with a garrad 2000 deck. It plays records but the auto changer does not operate and has to be done manually. It will not even return when the record has finished. The record overarm swings too far to the left but is stable when lifted to put records on - see photo's.

Before I start to look at the player to repair can anyone suggest what the problem might be with the record overarm and what if any capacitors/resistors should be replaced. Identification of the model is necessary for me to obtain the necessary instructions/schematics.

I hope someone can help.

Thanks Martin

Is it a valve or transistor model?

Indeed. There's a similar one in this thread:-

https://www.vintage-radio.net/forum/...ad.php?t=91296

I've not seen a circuit for this specific model, but I believe it's similar to the Bush RP60.

So it's presumably one of the first post-Rank/Bush/Murphy-takeover Dansettes.

I wonder if the Garrard deck is original? The example I linked to has a BSR deck.

I wouldn't be surprised. The later RBM Dansettes used Garrard Autoslim-series decks too AFAIK.

David tells us this...https://www.vintage-radio.net/forum/...25&postcount=7

Overarms when they move too far to the right (in your pictures) generally mean the stop pin (for want of a better name) has snapped off but yours looks intact in picture 3, so not sure, but should not affect operation too much.
As for the tonearm not returning, that is down to dried up grease on the trip pawl and other parts, take off the Deck/platter, remove the silver aluminium gear which has the trip pawl attached to it, remove trip pawl after freeing up and clean, the trip pawl should move freely with out any lubrication apart from on the spindle.
Most of the other mechanics will want a service/clean as well, but don't add grease or oil where it was not before.
More detailed instructions can be found in the stickies above.

The looks like a Dansette "Bermuda" mark 2 made from c. 1966/67. This will be one of the last players made by the original Dansette company before the RBM takeover. It will have a 2 valve amplifier - UCL82/UY85. The deck is a Garrard 2000. Forgive me if you already know this, but I assume you know the correct position of the overarm when in use?

Thanks to everyone for their response to my post. I will start to clean/service the player in the next few days and then will be able to confirm the valves fitted. Is there no specific service sheets available for the player/turntable? Are there any specific capacitors/resistors that should be replaced.

Please would someone advise how I see replies without searching for my original post.

As far as I know there is no specific diagram available for this machine. If you can post pictures we may be able to reverse engineer it.

What capacitors to change? That rather depends on what's fitted. If they're Mullard Mustards or similar types you won't need to bother. If they're waxies or similar then the audio coupling cap will need changing as a minimum.

I removed the platter today and it is very clean but was unable to remove the wooden deck to access the the components. On removing the screws attaching the platter to the board I intended to lift the board to access, unfortunately it will only start to lift on the right hand side and not the left hand.I obviously do not want to use too much force in removing it. Is there anything else that has to be done before removal.Any advise would be appreciated.

The original BSR C123 (or 9?) series autochanger has been removed and a (better) Garrard 2000 has been subsitituted. Good for you although not as it was originally.
This may have needed an adapation to the motor board cut out making it harder to remove. It will lift out by angling the motor board. It will help you if you fasten up the transist screws to avoid uneccesary deck movement. When the Garrard was fitted, some of the original motor and pick wiring connections will have been disturbed/de-soldered.

I finally managed to remove deck this morning, it has obviously been made for the garrard deck to be fitted. It's just a very tight fit!!
It has Mullard valves fitted UY85/UCL82 as you stated and confirms that it is the Bermuda MK II. I have attached photo's of the components. I obviously am unable to see the capacitors in the can but believe it is marked as 32+50pf on the outside.I am not sure if any of the components need to be changed. The only suspect being the black capacitor ( photo 2) as the wiring seems to be burnt. If this is to be replaced could you suggest a replacement.

I cannot see anything that is obviously wrong with the autochanger mechanism but will make sure it is cleaned and use the manual that I have for the AT5/6 that I have as I have been unable to locate the 2000 online.

Thanks Martin.

That's not a capacitor, it's a 100 ohm wirewound resistor, most likely R11. Check it with your meter, it may be OK.

Thanks Graham. It is reading a 109 which is within tolerance.

I think the circuit might be similar to the one in the Dansette Prince (apart from the dropper resistor for the valve heaters) It looks like it's using a hum cancelling output transformer.

I would replace those sufflex type capacitors as well.

Lawrence.

I believe you said that the player works ie plays records through the speaker?

That being the case make sure there's no positive voltage on pin 3 (control grid) of the UCL82. If there is replace C7. (Bush RP60 circuit).

As for the smoothers, so long as the mains hum isn't excessive and they don't get hot, they'll be fine.
