Is that a whole watt of power or more?

Re: Radio Caroline to return on Medium Wave.
1kW asked. Pretty DX-able.
This is exciting news! Radio Caroline was one of the first stations I listened to on my first crystal set, and on its transistor-amplified successor!

Re: Radio Caroline to return on Medium Wave.
This is great news. I wonder if it will live up to the original?
Thanks, Peter |

Re: Radio Caroline to return on Medium Wave.
Yes, great news. RSLs and Internet radio are fine in their own way but this is the real thing. Interesting that all that wide open space on MW isn't just being abandoned.
If I've understood the technology aspect, they are planning on using (existing) studios in Kent linked to the Ross Revenge using mobile phone technology - 4G. A bit unclear in the very brief description though. Graham (in North Essex)

This is great news for Medium Wave, I never expected it to happen. I might struggle to get it clearly where I am, but when I get my AR88 running with a decent antenna I'll have a go!

Re: Radio Caroline to return on Medium Wave.
Caroline has been trying to get back on MW for some years. At the moment, it is a fantastic station as it doesn't carry news, traffic reports, adverts, chat or anything else that makes it sound like any other station. It just plays great rock based music which is the choice of the DJ's.
My greatest worry is how will they fund being on MW? If they have to start pandering to advertisers, there is great potential to ruin a fantastic station. Cheers Nick |

Re: Radio Caroline to return on Medium Wave.
First tune to be played from the AM network when it goes on the air should be Radio Ga Ga by Queen. Great news that AM transmission has a future albeit on a smaller local scale.

Re: Radio Caroline to return on Medium Wave.
R.Caroline's MW transmitter will, of course, not be audible here in Oxfordshire, so, hopefully they'll carry programmes commemorating the 50th. anniversary of thr Marine Offences Act on their Internet station. I tried, without success to pick uop Manx Radio on the two recent Bank Holiday weekends when they relayed R. Caroline. Too much electrical/electronic interference on MW these days for either of my AM sets to pick up distant stations! I used to be able to receive Manx Radio in the evenings, but that was maybe 20 years ago or more

Re: Radio Caroline to return on Medium Wave.
I'll certainly be twiddling furiously to hear it. At night on a clearish channel it should reach up to Cheshire. Who knows, even in daylight hours on a very quiet day it may be just audible. Then there are those web SDR's of course.
And it should open with Caroline by the Fortunes!

Re: Radio Caroline to return on Medium Wave.
Strangely enough- in my teenage years ( possibly some time in the last century ) , way up in the North West Highlands, one station that was clear was Radio Caroline. Took a bit of "molesting" of the trimmers on the tuning capacitor, but it came through loud and clear on my old PYE.

Re: Radio Caroline to return on Medium Wave.
Old Codger - I was a teenage listener to the offshore stations and it was amazing how their signals travelled. Even in the middle of a Summer's day, Radio City was listenable on my valve radio. Radio London was about the same, but Caroline South was hardly there at all. Caroline North was OK but not strong here in East Manchester, although it quickly improved if we went West of the city in the car.
I think the prevailing noise level was much lower back then. Nowadays there's a 'fug' of hash & buzz across most of MF. It'll be a challenge to receive Caroline on it's new legal frequency at the low power, but I'll certainly give it a go. Early evening is often a good time for this kind of reception.

Re: Radio Caroline to return on Medium Wave.
In Cardiff back in the '60s I could get Caroline North, South and Big L at about equal signal strength, though it was truly magical when Caroline sailed North to the IoM broadcasting all the way! I so wish I'd recorded it. City wasn't very strong but at night I could get Roy Bates's Radio Essex which I think ran maybe 500 Watts. I only got the "please tune to 390m" message from KING but I think KING was low power too. Oh for the days of low background noise.

I must be daft but I can't find either the starting date or the frequency, anyone know?
