Default For owners of older HP inkjet printers

I'm putting this up, as it is fairly relevant!

If, like me you have one of the older HP inkjet printers, the 500 or 600 series (the 500 qaulify - I got mine when I had my 286, about 1994), and you find it starts to smear, it is worth carefully dismantling the printer, and cleaning the area where the cartriges park, and the felt cleaning pad next to it, as over time, they become loaded with ink which then transfers itself to the bottom of the cartridge, and then to the paper......

The parts can usually be cleaned with water, but IPA may be needed for stubborn deposits.

I am told this is still a problem with the latest models, though I only have a 560 and a 670 here.

Jim.

I had the same trouble with my HP 890c and got details of how to clean the " Service Station " ie where the cartridges rest. You can get this info for most HP printers at www.hp.com.

Here is the page for the 600 series: http://h20015.www2.hp.com/hub_search...bpa00489&lc=en just go to " Cleaning the service station " . It definitely works but it is quite messy.

Our HP Deskjet 959C has been fine so far. But then it doesn't get a lot of use - general printing is done on a Samsung ML1210 laser printer, and the HP is only used when we want to print colour.

The laser is a lot cheaper to run - we've had it over a year, print maybe a dozen pages a day, and it's only on it's second toner (I bought a refill from http://www.refill-toner.co.uk/).
