I swapped an entire head drum on a Panasonic NV-7500 and there was no alignment needed at all. Even the tracking was perfect with pre-recorded and self-recorded tapes.

I'm sure it will be something simple Mark.

As I said I was more of a Hitachi man, but I seem to remember a lazy microswitch on the JVCs and the need of a slight curl to be formed on the operating lever so the loading motor ran for a few mS longer.

A bit more modern than the 3V30! This mechanism did suffer from hardened and sticky grease on the loading mechanism. That might be your problem. Try turning the loading motor by hand and see how easy it is. Remember on these machines if loading isn't achieved in a fixed time then the machine aborts.

Yes when I take the bottom off it looks as though it is stopping loading to early but the was a you tube video somewhere showing error with microswitch. I have no idea how to take loading mechanism out or I would.

Btw could any of you guys fix this for me?

I'm sure someone near you could. Try a post in the 'services wanted' section.

It's certainly a testament on how accurately head drums are machined.
l used to repair VCR's (and still get them in occasionally)
lf the head was a new one from the manufacturer then it would rarely need alignment.
But there was a company in Manchester that used to do recon heads and they would sometimes need a tweak.

An exception was one of the Philips machines (the one where the head was secured with one allen bolt on a clamp)
For that you needed a plastic alignment tool in fact the new head from Philips would come with the plastic tool and a couple of shims to set the height.

l've got a couple of these kits if anybody wants one. (but l've not got the actual head sorry!)
