Default Siemens VE301W muffled sound

I'm finally nearing the end of my epic marathon of set sorting. I have two German peoples sets, a DKE 38 ( the poverty model ) and a Siemens built VE301W. The DKE, with its one valve and cardboard speaker, sounds rather better than the VE301. Has anyone any experience of these sets ? The 301 is still on all of its original capacitors, and I am building up the courage to rebuild the big multi capacitor Anyway it sounds really muffled, do we think this is just cap related ?
