Which is exactly what I found taking my technical education through ONC electrical engineering and then through three years to HNC+. Even at a junior level of transistor teaching, at no point was the subject of 'how to bias a transistor correctly' even hinted at.

I wonder if OldtechFan96 has tried remaking this amplifier on a groundplane yet? It's also worth having a look around to see if there are any noisy battery chargers for laptops/phones nearby. These will limit the benefit of any preamp as they can generate lots of RF interference that the preamp might pick up via the antenna or the preamp wiring or by common mode effects on any coax cable. Even having a computer nearby can cause problems, the cable connection to the computer monitor can also leak interference over a short range and that might spoil things.

The VHF amplifier is in the to do queue at the moment. I will recommence things when I get a better understanding of groundplanes and circuit building.

I think I'm lucky as I've never had issues with computer borne interference.
