Re: Royalty has been paid on this apparatus...
I have added the latest details in my spreadsheet, but rather than upload it every day I will upload it every few days.
It would be really good to get more examples of pre 1950 and post 1964 thanks for your contributions Mike |

I tried to open the attached file but when opening it requests to save again rather than actually opening. I'm not sure if my .xls converter is compatible or outdated. Regards Symon. |

Re: Royalty has been paid on this apparatus...
Assuming you have a program installed that can open .xls spreadsheets, it might just be a matter of navigating to your "downloads" folder and opening it from there.

" American `tubes’ had low `gain per stage’ (of amplification), higher performance being achieved by increasing the number of tubes........... In Britain, by contrast, minimising royalties led firms to employ valves with progressively higher gain, or multiple valves contained in one envelope. These were produced to close tolerances, at substantially higher costs........" Actual examples of valve types would clearly have been outside the scope of the original document, but it would be interesting to look at this assertion from the technical point of view. In particular, I struggle to believe that American valves were of significantly lower gain than their British equivalents. Can anyone think of examples? I recognise that some US radios prioritised a high valve count for marketing purposes, and that the corresponding individual stage gain would have been adjusted appropriately by choice of component values. The British designer on the other hand would have been discouraged from a high valve count by high BVA 'per valve' royalties and would have designed accordingly. But I don't see that necessarily suggests that the American valve per se was of lower gain than its British counterpart. Were multi-function valves such as the triode-hexode or double-diode triode really a peculiarly British invention in response to BVA royalties? Again, can anyone think of early examples? Martin

Re: Royalty has been paid on this apparatus...
My understanding is that Marconi, for example, charged royalties on a per-valve -holder basis, so the pressure to move to multifunction valves came from this and was resisted initially by the BVA.

Re: Royalty has been paid on this apparatus...
Confusingly, one of the documents photographed above in this thread refers to the patent pool royalty as payable per-valve holder, and also states that each individual 'anode-cathode electron stream' counts as a valve!

Re: Royalty has been paid on this apparatus...
Wasn't there also at one time a disregard of power-rectifiers in the 'valve-counting' for royalty-purposes? I can see how that would have made sense in the days when most radios were battery-powered and you needed a sold-separately 'eliminator' to run off the mains.
Into the 1960s it was common to see domestic radios advertised as "four valves plus rectifier". |

I found the problem, Microsoft Excel Viewer wasn't installed on my usual Windows 7 computer. It's sorted out and I can now view the spread sheet. Also, after trying to open the same file on my Win 10 computer it envoked a download to install the Excel Viewer and that too is now working well. I am pleased the issue is now resolved. Re: Royalty has been paid on this apparatus...
Hi Mike.
I suspect the Philips V6U is probably foreign made. I'll have a look at it tomorrow to check if there are any labels that might give some clues. Regards Symon. |

Hi Mike (member crackle).
I noticed an error in the spread sheet, entry no#14, Philips B3G63A is listed as a TV. It is actually a radio. Regards Symon. |
