Default Breaking The Codes

The series has been on TPTV from Mon - Thursday this week [very early]. Fascinating stuff with two of the four episodes related to Enigma. Put together by the TV presenter and Historian, William Wollard, in 1995! I thought I knew it but apparently not. Recorded today and yesterdays episodes. Should be repeated in the course of things but available as a stream from the TPTV site immediately.

TPTV are having a remarkably cheap weekend event in March with screenings, discussions, stalls, music etc.

There are actually six episodes of this but TPTV don't always show a full run, for reasons unknown. It took me quite a while to collect all six episodes. Yes, they are worth taking the trouble to find.

Very similar in tone and the same presenter as 'The Secret War' which was another great series, loosely based on R.V. Jones's Most Secret War which is a terrific read if anyone hasn't read it yet.

I remember William Woollard was one of the presenters in the late-1970s BBC series "The Secret War", one episode of which was on Enigma.

The individual episodes of 'Breaking the Codes' (Actually 'Decrypting The Codes' according to the programme's own titles) are:

-The Men Of Room 40
-The Rise Of Enigma
-The Breaking Of Purple
-The Battle Of Midway
-Enigma Variations
-Battle Of The Atlantic

That is not necessarily the correct broadcast order, but it is the date order in which I collected the episodes from TPTV. if anyone is aware of even more episodes in the series, please let us know.

I only saw yesterday's programme. Bit disappointed as it seemed "padded out" with lots of general footage from WW2. Didn't bother recording it this morning.

The Secret War series on BBC 1977 - 1978 with Professor R V Jones was the best in my opinion. Straight from the horses mouth! However, codebreaking was only a part of the series. Seems it may be available on youtube.
I had the vhs tapes.

Thanks Dickie and Sirius in particular I'd not located a DVD yet. This info from everyone helps as eg, one site says two episodes at 1hr 10mins each [TPTV has shown four at 30 mins this time]. It's a bit like sorting out the Radio and Television Servicing books various editions. I shall try and get the six programs as indicated.

I've got the Secret War on VHS and I found missing tape in the window of a Ramsbottom shop, during the annual WW2 event we have every year. Despite the venue it was a bit of a coincidence.
Dave

PS. I should have said that the TPTV Convention [my post 1*] is at St Albans.
