Default Zonal 16mm Audio tape FOC

Hello!

We have 16 x 16mm Zonal Tapes (used, but appear in VGC). I would imagine they should be easy to reuse. Tapes are free to a good home. Postage will be expensive (at a guess, I'd say they weigh ~15 KG), so collection from N London is cheapest (am happy to post - or you can send a pre-paid label).

Cheers!

I am interested - will send a PM.

Don't let this put others off as I suspect I may have made an error in my enthusiasm.

Martin, bear in mind that these are professional tapes in pancakes. You can't just use them on standard tape recorders without a fair bit of faffing about.

Presumably the tape is 16mm wide with standard 16mm single perf. perforations and so can only be used in professional cine recorders and editors. There is also 1/4" tape (cinetape) with cine perforations that can be used in conventional tape recorders. We used the latter type of tape when I was a student in the 1960's, with a synchroniser linking a Bolex H16 camera with a standard Tandberg tape recorder.

Thanks chaps.

I realised my error as soon as I had posted.

Yes, it's mostly used in the film industry. I guess it's obsolete technology now.

16mm 'sep mag', as it was known was also used in broadcast television production prior to the adoption of video. Programmes such as Minder, Sweeny, World at War were all shot on 16mm film. For transmission the 'picture' film would be laced on a telecine machine, with the 16mm magnetic sound track on a seperate unit, hence 'sep mag'. These were locked together when run.
My first job was in the Quality Control dept at Zonal Films, incidentally there was also a 17,5mm and 35mm version of magnetic film.

Maybe you should adopt the tapes for sentimental reasons, Amtec :- )

NB - we have no idea what's on the tapes... They were recorded in Nigeria in the 80s apparently. If you find a lost Fela Kuti LP on them you'll have to give us a cut of the record labels's advance.

In the 1988 Kodak Professional catalogue, a 320m roll of Eastman 16mm tape cost 9.74 (plus VAT). Around 30 mins at sound speed.

Yes - I used to have to copy the 1/4" location sound tapes recorded on a Nagra 4.2 onto these ready for the edit on a Steenbeck.

The recorder was a venerable Westrex vertical machine which was around the size of a large fridge-freezer!

I still have a 16mm mag fullcoat test film in the loft somewhere, not likely to get used now, one of the more obsolete technologies these days.

Remembering, that if it was a loose wind, the centre would fall out, and didn't want to go back in again.

We had two ways of sorting that...........
