I can confirm that at one time it was possible to save a search which found nothing, but that's no longer the case. I'm using IE10.

Yes, Graham, I agree. I have several hard-to-find radios, clocks, LPs and books in my posession to prove it, too.

I note that foreign eBay sites now behave in the same way as the UK one in this respect, so it's not just a "local" problem.

Nick.

Quickly researching some other stuff a couple of months ago I came across similar reporting in another forum (can't remember which now!) - so 'we are not alone'.

I suggest a concerted effort by everyone to contact e-Bay to sort this out for, like Nick and others, I rely heavily on 'saved searches' for quite obscure items.

If I search for something and there's no results I don't get the option to save the search, on that results page, but if I then click the "Advanced" search button (top right) I can save the search by ticking the "Save this search to My eBay" box and then clicking search button above it.

Thanks to you too, Dave, but as described in posts 2 and 3, if no results are found, this doesn't actually do what it should. In other words, if you then select My eBay and then Saved searches, the search doesn't show-up in the saved list.

If results are found however, your method does work, and a "pop up" (as Mark calls it in post 4) appears on top of the results, with an option asking whether you'd like to be e-mailed etc. (see attachment).

If this is NOT the case for you, then please let me know what browser you're using.

Thanks,

Nick.

Hi Nick,

It seems to be working fine for me. I'm using Firefox and Windows Vista.

I tried an advanced search for "Areodyne radio" (deliberately misspelled), after ticking the save this search box. There's no results but I then get the popup offering to save the search and an option for email notifications. The search is now in my saved search list.

Thanks Dave.

I've just done the same Advanced search as you using Firefox, and NO popup for me.

Just the same if ESET antivirus/antispyware temporarily disabled.

I'm using XP Home. Maybe that's the clue?

Nick.

I've just fired up another laptop with Windows XP and Firefox and there does seem to be a problem with XP.

If I do an advanced search, with the saved search option, for a random bunch of letters I get no results and no pop up but if I then click advanced search again (the search is still there), re-tick the save search box and search again the pop up appears and I can save it!

That might be a useful workaround, Dave, will give it a go!

I use XP but I stopped getting the 'Save Star button' to work months ago; now even the 'Advanced' button save won't work... and if I click 'Contact us' by e-mail, nothing happens! So I had to resort to phoning them. I shall write a letter instead...

I sincerely hope e-Bay isn't expecting us to buy a new W.7 PC off e-Bay!

David, I've just tried that, and sad to say, no popup appeared for me in spite of following your instructions to the letter.

Same with IE and FireFox.

One thing that nobody has mentioned is 'cookies'. A while ago the rules about cookies changed so that you had to agree (or not) to their use when you first visited a website, as you've probably noticed by now.

Features like the one you are discussing often depend on cookies for proper operation, so I'm wondering if some of you are having problems because you happen to have vetoed the use of cookies by the site.

Just a thought.

No its not cookie issue... this problem is sporadic. If I go to eBay direct through IE, it now works (again!)... but it wasn't recently! As Nick says, if there is a '0' return for items under a search, it is not possible to save that search for e-mail updates.

If I go to eBay through my usual AOL start-up it is still impossible to save anything. Cookies are as bad as ever - despite the new legislation, dreamt up by politicians, no less!

Is it possible that some ebay servers are running different versions of their code, so it is random whether the workaround functions or not? They will also sometimes deliberately randomly assign users to new beta test versions just to see what they think before imposing it on everyone.

I think that's almost certainly the case. It's common to come across apparently random variations between sessions.
Not much use as Beta tests unless there's a decent feedback channel, though!

The guys at Ebay had decided to remove the Save search option, I know this because I emailed them (a live email session). The ebay helper said the function had been removed (and that others had complained about this too).

I use this option for items that aren't available yet, therefore I want an email when they finaly become available.

I bet this was done to help Ebay save money (by having less searches for their servers to process).

The option is available now though

That's interesting, but means that one of us was given incorrect information, either accidentally or deliberately.

It seems like a very daft idea to remove it, so maybe they've bowed to public pressure. Let's hope it stays.
