Default Yaesu FT-790R display/error code

I have recently purchased a used Yaesu FT-790R which appears to work but the main LCD display occasionally shows the letter "E" and nothing else.

It usually occurs when switching to FM mode.

It can be cleared by twiddling knobs and pressing buttons after which the normal frequency display and functionality is restored.

Does anyone have any idea clues as to what this indication means? I can't find any reference to error codes in the manual.

Thanks, Ray

There is a reset procedure in the user manual to use after the back up battery is replaced.
I wonder have you been through that? Have you changed the battery?

Good luck.
