Default Chrome Effect Spray Paint

Hi, yesterday in the Sam 99p shop in Hounslow they were selling cans of Chrome Effect Spray Paint.

Bought one but have yet to try.

Appears to be a number of Sam 99p branches, however possibly only in London and some home counties. Have visited the ones in Croydon and Wembley.

My experience is that these cheapo type stores can carry different products, to each other, even within the same chain of stores.

Regards - Miike

I have never had any success with chrome paint sprays. A lot of us would be interested in any paint for the early plastic "Roberts" badges which are usually rubbed through to the yellow plastic. The "Chrome" spray I used looked like dull grey colour. Mike, I await some photos of your results.

John.

I've tried what purport to be 'chrome' aerosol sprays and the top cap of the can looks enticingly like bright chrome, but the results have never lived up to the claims and even expensive ones look no better than silver alloy wheel restoration paint, so I'll be interested to see the results. If the plastic 'B U S H' letters when sprayed looked as good as the cap on the cans I've tried, it would be excellent, but no luck so far.

Either Lidl or Aldi sometimes have it and it's also with mirror-finish cap. I remain sceptical!

Somebody seems to mange to spray the caps in the finish that I want but I have yet to find a spray to match. Be interesting to see what the consensus is.

Hi.

I bought a can of this so-called chrome finish spray paint from Aldi a couple of years back. I too was attracted to the chrome finish on the cap. Despite properly shaking the can, the sprayed finish on the ROBERTS badge looks more like aluminium than chrome, another disappointment.

I wonder if experimenting with electrolysis to impart real chrome on the plastic badge is worth trying. I assume the plastic would first have to be pre treated to make it electrically conductive for the process to be possible. Just thinking aloud.

It would be good to know how it was originally applied to the badge.

Regards
Symon.

I've had reasonable success in the past with one of these sprays - possibly PlastiKote. Not as bright as real chrome, but much better than aluminium-like 'silver' paint. Part of the secret is exceptionally thorough agitation to keep the metal particles in suspension, and application of a relatively thick coat to allow them to disperse evenly.
I've mentioned before that 'silver' leaf is available, which might work for this sort of job.
The original badges were probably done by vacuum deposition.

Thanks for the tip about PlastiKote. I've just ordered some and look forward to trying it. Frankly anything better than the gritty looking aluminium paint will do for the job.

I too have tried and failed to find an effective chrome effect paint without having to resort to chrome plating specialist (got quoted £85 for re chroming a pair of 10 inch equipment handles that were fitted to a piece of test gear last year) the closest so far has been VHT plate finish which comes closer than some of the others tried over the years. The only trouble is that it seems to rub off quite easily even weeks after fully cured and can end up looking more grey then chrome if this happens.

If you need a chrome-like finish on plastic you could do worse than try contacting people that aluminise telescope mirrors using vacuum deposition techniques.

One other approach that may be worth checking out; electroless nickel plating.

These are solutions which will deposit shiny nickel on virtually any surface just by immersion. I once saw a baby's first shoe plated in this way by his doting father. We used a solution called Nifoss 80, but I'm not sure if it is still available in the UK.

I still have a spray can festering in the garage from years ago bought for a Motorcycle mudguard as previous comments shiny cap but came out Aluminum grey but perhaps I didn't shake it enough! I was hoping modern formulations would be better the Plasticote product sounds good.
