Socket for mounting B4/5 valve at 90 degrees ?
I've recently come by this socket which looks as though it's designed to mount a B4/5 valve oriented at 90 degrees to the usual direction. Did it have a particular use or was it just a fairly common thing back in the early days ? If it does have a particular use and if someone is looking for one then I'll put it up in the Sets and Parts Offered sub-forum as I can't foresee me ever using it here.
Cheers GJ

You often see them used on late 20's early 30's set where a screen grid valve is used.
The valve is mounted horizontally going though a hole in an aluminium screen. The pictiure shours the arrangement but without a sideways holder. Cheers Mike T

Re: Socket for mounting B4/5 valve at 90 degrees ?
The other place you see these is in small portable sets where they have tried to make the sets "thin"
To achieve this they mount the valve sidways. I have seen sets where the valves are on a hinge and can be rotated through 90 degress as well Cheers Mike T

Re: Socket for mounting B4/5 valve at 90 degrees ?
Thanks Mike, I'm much informed. Given that it's not truly strange and therefore only useful to one or two people I'll probably put it on the bring-and-buy at the NVCF.
Cheers, GJ

Re: Socket for mounting B4/5 valve at 90 degrees ?
Here's one from the Bulgin catalogue of 1936-37, a standard valveholder mounted in a metal bracket, said to be useful for the purpose mentioned in #2.
