Default Extinct or very hard to find sets (625 lines to 1990)

Looking at adverts second hand sets has had me notice that some TVs seem in plentiful supply while some never seem to be offered regardless of age, & not often exist in the hands of collectors either.

I know there have been some threads like this in the past, but I thought to keep this to the criteria of being 625 line capable sets (I'll include 405 line sets that could be convertible to dual standard) on sale in the UK up to 1990.

Probably the rarest mono sets are dual standard with FM radio. To my knowledge, only
the Thorn 900 chassis offered such a variation (I am not including TV/Radiograms, of which I think only Pye made such a set). Probably some Decca, Pye, and ITT single
standard mono sets are less common.

There seems to be hardly any ITT & GEC single standards (colour or mono) doing the rounds compared to the Thorn, Rank, Philips, Pye, Decca & the bigger Japanese brands.

I have an unused empty cabinet for a Ferguson mono tv, when I got it, it was sold as being for either a 1400 or 1500 chassis. I’ve never found out what model it is! I did ask on one of the forums a while ago, but there wasn’t a definitive answer.

Hi.

I think the 110 degree delta gun sets from the mid 1970s must be thin on the ground now. Models I was thinking about were RRI Z179, Thorn 4000, Philips G9, Grundig 5012, Telefunken 711 and many other continentals such as Saba, ASA, Finlandia etc. The Finlux Peacock must be in the rare class now.

The 90 degree delta gun Thorn 9800, early PIL sets like the GEC 20AX, ITT CVC20, Decca 70/90/110 and Thorn 9000 aren't seen very often.

Regards,
Symon

Not just Thorn. Radio & Allied offered 405/625 mono sets with VHF/FM radio facilities. The final set with radio being a GEC 2017, I believe (and probably the Sobell equivalent 1017..?).
Radio Rentals also made mono d/std sets with VHF radio - right up to their 680 hybrid series.

I suspect they're less rare in the UK, but it's quite hard to find a Philips 2A on the continent.

I remember one of the "Finlandia"-branded TVs [made by Salora] that were rented by Granada in the mid-1970s - a friend's parents had one - was the first TV I saw with sliders for all the user-functions [volume/contrast/colour etc] - and touchpad [rather than mechanical push-button] tuning.

Attached pic is nearly-but-not-quite the model in question. It was really rather impressive to me as a sixth-form student, when compared to the parental Baird in a square box with a sideways-sliding tambour across the front to make the thing look even-more-obtrusive when not in use.

I have the similar Finlandia model as described above, it has round "touch" pads for channel selection. The CRT is an A67-150X 110 degree with the narrow neck. I think the LOPT is duff on mine. I also have a 22" model using a basically similar chassis, again badged Granada/Finlandia. This one uses the more usual A56-120X and the line stage is slightly different due to this although the signals panels are the same. There are two on-off switches, one giving an "instant on" feature, with a pilot LED. These are the only examples of these sets I have ever seen.

I haven't seen one since I was an apprentice in 1979, the firm I worked for had a few out I think they had disposed of them by 1981 when I left and got a proper job..
There was one on ebay not so long ago I was tempted, it's probably the only one left!
I have a few Mono sets in my collection I consider to be fairly rare A Philips Style 70 with a clock . A Philips 20" single standard Hybrid with a white cabinet a couple of Invicta "11U" chassis sets a 7070 (not seen another since the mid 70's) and a "gay Cavalier" Made as a rental set never seen another one of those!

I also have a Multibroadcast which is just pre convertible I think that set must have been 'liberated' at some point as they destroyed their ex rentals at the time.
Another rare set belongs to a friend a very early G6 but the Alba version...
Oh and I do have a single standard GEC series 1 with a "Weetabix" chipboard case...

More Thorn 1600 chassis sets seem to survive than I realised, considering Radio Rentals (& probably some of the other rental companies) recalled & scrapped them due to dry joints causing them to overheat.

The dry joints were dealt with on the revised 1615, which might explain the survivors, or did other owners (company or private) have the problem fixed?

Hopefully....

I remember a trade outlet having piles of 1600 s they chopped the chassis out and sold the cabinet with tube cheaply, the chassis were thrown on a scrap pile outside they had a deal with one of the rental firms to take the sets and dispose of them but weren't allowed to sell them complete.
Some of the sets were new I'm sure. I remember thinking it was a waste! I didn't realise why at the time.

I bet the Amstrad 22" " superwide" is another a rare set most seem to have been scrapped after a few years it was an absolute pile of junk!

My main interest is 625 line monochrome TVs, especially the later large screen solid state sets. It's surprising how few of these are left, considering in the late 1970s there were around 10 million black and white TV licences in the UK. Now there are a few thousand, out of a total of over 25 million - a very tiny percentage.

Some rare 625 B/W TVs:

Bush / Murphy A816 chassis

Thorn 1600 ((Ferguson 3831, Marconiphone 4831, Ultra 6831) 17 inch portable. I've never seen one, except in a catalogue. Apparently they used to catch fire! Back in 2010, a forum member M0ALK Richard offered me two of them, one of which produced smoke when switched on. I didn't take up his offer at the time, but now I sort of wish I had. These must be pretty much extinct by now.

Plustron TV17 and TV19 semi-portable. I haven't seen one since the 1980s, though a service manual appears on ebay from time to time. Are these sets also extinct?

In my collection, but also fairly rare: 20" Ferguson 3850 (Thorn 1615 chassis), 24" Pye (Philips E2 chassis), 20" Pye 51BL7215 (Philips L7 chassis - their last large screen monochrome TV). Plus I have a couple of unusual 17" portables, an Iskra TV37 "galaxy" made in Slovenia (formerly Yugoslavia) and a CiHAN Videologic 17" monochrome TV from Turkey, c. 1980.

Wasn't the Thorn 1400 a dual standard model with carrier buzz on 625 line sound?

Come to think of it... Turkish sets. I've once repaired a Vestel 11AK01 or the like and vaguely remember similarities to Goldstar but could be wrong. I've never seen one again but would like to add one to my collection. I'd very much like to know more about early license production in Turkey. The earliest Beko sets I know of, used a Thomson TEA2026 so were probably late 1980's but Beko was in business before.

Also, Eastern European sets. I know the Indiana chassis was made in Romania and not really rare, but who designed it and was it also made elsewhere?

Yes they were, but not all buzzed because of intercarrier problems. Some were affected by 50Hz pickup from the scan coils and a modified screening can was available to fit over the FM detector. Sad to say a lot of people missed the fact that if you swung out the chassis it disappeared. Thinking it was alignment problems they twiddled the IF coils which made it 100 times worse.

The 1400 is not exactly rare, there have been several 16" Ferguson Courier portables on Ebay just recently. Now the 4000 chassis as has already been mentioned is another matter. 1580s also seem thin on the ground

John.

The earliest Beko sets I have seen were clones of a Sony 21"(or was it a sanyo?) model, the one with the angled speakers on the side. circa 1990 as they were Nicam. I think the chassis was 10.1 Siesta. I found a picture online!
