Default Printing decals for applying to wood.

This is a tricky one, and something I'll no doubt come across when I refinish my latest project (a HMV).

A good few sets I've seen have had the logo on top, under the finish, or in some cases function labels near the knobs (such as volume, tone etc.)

I know that these can be knocked up on photoshop, printed on transparent paper and stuck on before lacquer etc., but how successful have your results been, and has anyone a different solution?

As always, thanks in advance.

Ryan.

The trouble is that a printer assumes you are printing onto white paper. As soon as you try to print anything lighter than the printers primary colours onto transparent media, you start getting transparent dots.

I got around the problem with a Marconi by printing two logos onto waterslide paper. One had the black, blue and red colours. The other, just, had the black outline inside which I hand painted with gold paint.

When dry the gold one was applied first and the other went on top .

...I've attached some photos, because I think they'll explain better than I just have

That's some tasty workmanship there, David.

Specifically, the image here is what I'm going to attempt, a bog standard HMV logo, about an inch or so high, thankfully, the only decal on the set.

I had a Pilot (P44?) through my hands a few years ago, and it had a seperate gold leaf lettered decal for the four knobs on the cabinet, which would quadruple the work.

The inability to print lighter shades is also a problem when it comes to dial scales, as they invariably have white lettering too, but that's a problem for another day.

Thanks for the helpful input

Superb Job!

I have tried for ages to get this right without success. Mine were nearly right but not good as good as these. Would you consider making the artwork available to me by PM to save me re inventing the wheel?
Thanks

RoundyMooney - I have artwork for HMV similar to yours but with the background cleared. If you'd like a copy via email - or anyone else would, for that matter - just PM me.
Dave - I've PM'd you re a copy of your excellent artwork for the Marconi.

Tony, that's most kind, and I'd be delighted to get a copy of that.

Thanks again,

Ryan.
