Thumbs up The "Manton" standards converter - repeatable design!!!

Hi,

aftyer a few evenings work, I've assembled a complete standards converter to Kat's design, and it worked first go!

I am looking at a picture of test card "A" as I type this.

I have not made any component changes to Kat's Mk2 design, the only issue being I need a better power supply (my "wall wart" is putting a lot of ripple on the -ve line, resulting in unstable synch levels. My fault, not Kat's).

I'll try and post a couple of pictures later.

Jim.

Well done Jim! Have you done a full converter, ie with analogue video capture card, or the version that Kat demo'ed at the NVCF which could replay DVDs or work with a Freeview card?.

Hi Jeffrey,

it is the "full" version, currently with an analogue tuner card, so I can go straight from off-air to 405 line, it will also browse the web, Play DVDs, and one or two other tricks that I haven't got to grips with yet!

Excellent news, Jim

I've now put the Russian portables away and I'm setting up the 405-line PC gear after a relaxing break; so I'll shortly be resuming work on the system. Also work is underway to get a website sorted out; among other things the circuit Jim and I have built will be published there now we know it's repeatable.

Getting pictures on vintage television sets; that's what motivates me. It's great to hear that there's another set doing what it was designed for once again. (Well, and a few more things besides; I've found it entertaining that I can browse the web on a 405-line set...)

Regards, Kat

Well, a decent power supply fixed most of the problems.......

I've included a photo of the circuit, a couple of screen shots, and a picture of the video waveform taken from the scope. Note the extremely large synch pulses (about -1.5V !) The patterning on the screen shots is a side effect of the camera, and is not apparent on the TV.

For completeness:

PC - Pentium 4, 1.4GHz processor, 640MB Ram, nVidia FX5200 video card, Hauppage WinTv analogue tuner card, cheap 100MHz LAN card (the cheapest in our local PC shop).

Video and synch combiner - Kat's Mk2 circuit.

Modulator - Philips PM5511B dual standard pattern generator.

Display - Sony 9-90UB dual standard 9" Tv in VHF 405 line mode.

Scope - Telequipment D54 (way out of cal, but it gives me a rough idea.....).

Power supply - Advance PMG 12V linear module, though any well regulated and smoothed unit will do.

Jim.

Hmm... that's odd... I think I need to compare my schematic with what I've actually got on my bits of veroboard again; I suspect another bit of tweaking hasn't made it back onto the schematic... it's not the first time...

Err... try swapping R36 - (390R on the schematic) for 8k2...

(Kat exits stage left and wanders off to correct the schematic...)

My fault; when adding new components it's easier in 'Eagle' to copy one that's already there... sometimes I forget to change the value...

Hope that slight change in value sorts out the overly-large sync pulses...

Cheers, Kat
