Elizabethan 56
Hi folks,
Does anyone know what deck this Elizabethan 56 machine has? It's definitely not a BSR TD2 or a Collaro Studio as I have a couple of other machines with those decks but the motors are Collaro. The amp side works very well when plugging my Yamaha keyboard into the gram jack socket although the volume pot is a bit crackly so will need some cleaning and it seems mechanically OK in terms of the linkages and interlocking tape deck buttons but there is no power to the motors. I think I'm going to need to check for loose wires with a multimeter. I'm very keen to get this up and running as it is much better than my other machines that have TD2 decks in that this one has space for full-sized reels and very conveniently located jack inputs on the top. Luckily the schematics were included in the case when I bought this but it would be good to find a service diagram for the deck like the ones I found for the Collaro Studio and TD2s. Thanks, Gary |

Re: Elizabethan 56
That deck looks like a MOTEK K9 from the late 1950s.

Hi,
Thats a nice simple mechanism! Is that the one that uses a spring instead of a rubber belt? I think it could be a Motek deck? Peter. |

Re: Elizabethan 56
Yes, it is a Motek, made by Robuk. Watch out it doesn't take off in fast wind...I think there was a Tape Recorder Service article on this deck in Tape Recorder around 1962. The American Radio History website has these..

Re: Elizabethan 56
Checking in Hellyer's Tape Recorder Manual, it is in fact a Motek K8 that is fitted on an Elizabethan model 56.
One thing that stands out about this model (from the general description) is the unconventional speed! 7.5 and 4.8 Inches per Second. Peter. |

I think it also runs right to left.

Re: Elizabethan 56
Wow, thanks for all the information, that's really useful. I've found some really interesting stuff in the Tape Recorder magazines on the American Radio History...lots of background on the tape recorder scene in general!
I'm going to have a look at the wiring to the switches and motors tomorrow evening so will let you know if I have any queries. |

Sam later decided to market his own complete tape-recorder using his improved Motek deck, designed by Eric Moore (the K.10) under a new 'Robuk' brand name, derived from Korobuk, operating as Robuk Electrical Industries Ltd in works backing onto his Motek factory. A certain, young Alan Sugar was, briefly, a salesman there! Barry |

Re: Elizabethan 56
Fascinated by the speed-change switch and the resultant (odd) speed shift.
I've heard of "pole-changing" speed change - maybe in Revox G36 etc? - but I'd thought these gave the normal 2:1 speed ratio. Can anyone educate us on this issue, please? Graham
