Dac 10
I've wanted one of these for years, but never managed to get one.
I was offered this from a friend, it was his late great aunt's and it hadn't seen the light of day since 1985. Basically his mum told him to take it home to get it out of her house recentley. The set was complete with no cracks or missing bits and he offered it to me for 'an interesting swap', this done I bought it home. When I opened it up I found that it was in excellent untouched condition. After a stripdown I started by changing all the wax caps (fairly nice job on this set !) After checking all the resistors I found that even most of these were in spec. I replaced 4 in total that 'were' wildly out of spec. Bearing in mind that it's not seen the mains for a good 25 years I decided to warm it up on a variac for a few hours, starting at 50V, then 75V, then 100V. At 150 Volts the dial lights could be seen to warm up and some heaters were lighting up. The HT also started to rise, this I kept an eye on measuring the voltage and kept an eye on the cap for any nasty seepage. At 200 Volts the sound started to rustle up. This was done over about an hour, the set was then left to run for an hour and then it treated it to the full goodness of the mains. The sound came up nice and loud and it sounded nice I've spent today with the Bakobrite and Flash Liquid and put the set back together. It works really well and I've got to say I'm amazed how sensitive it is It's been running for 3 hours now, no nasty smells or pop's, so I think this could be the new kitchen radio ~ Even Faith agrees ! Hope you've enjoyed reading this, for more pics and more detailed description please see my facebook page. Kind Regards Dr. Dave

Re: Dac 10
Nice job!
I have one in my collection given to me by a friend many years ago for helping him move house. They are almost a pleasure to work on and perform well (providing the "special" speaker is OK!) a much underrated set in my opinion! Rich.

Re: Dac 10
Lovely sets! That looks a really nice example, I think I had about 4 of them through my hands trying to assemble all the best bits to make one good one Don't be tempted to overtighten those 4 screws on the top!....

Re: Dac 10
Looks nice. I notice the Bush badge is missing; they're glued on and usually drop off given time. I wonder if it's lurking somewhere at your friend's mum's house? Might be worth a look as these aren't easy to replace unless you make a repro.

Re: Dac 10
Does the TV12 look similar to the TV22, the artdeco bakelite (even though the fifties) style case of the TV22. I know the TV22 normally has the Celestion 6"*4" speaker (as TV24) but I recall seeing one with a 6" round inverted magnet speaker mounted at an angle behind the grill.
But this should be another thread as it is getting ot Geof |

Re: Dac 10
Yes Geof same cabinet . Pre dates the 22 .
I wonder for what reason these speakers were made . do they take up less room ?not needed in the TV12 ! and to what else were they fitted I wonder . I am assuming the Dac10 is more tv22 period than tv12 ? I have a Dac 10 but didnt think it sounded as good as the 90. It may need more work of course . Its good to see the buttons are ok on this one . I have seen many that had degraded ,and Im sure I have seen a model with solid colour buttons ? |

I did look at the manual for removing the tuning assay, but decided not to. (It don't look that easy !) Thanks for all the nice comments folks Don't know what to do next, I've got that brilliant PYE record player, or 3 more radio's... Dr. Dave

Re: Dac 10
Nice job Doc.
Yours came up very nicely. The one I did had a cracked white bezel, but yours is lovely!! Quote:
I was very pleased with the one I did. The panel in these and other Bush sets makes capacitor replacement very easy(and neat!!)

Re: Dac 10
Philips Disc Jockey record players used the same speaker, and CPC do an ideal replacement.
There's a thread about them here: https://www.vintage-radio.net/forum/...ead.php?t=7251 Nick. |

Re: Dac 10
The matter of a replacement 'speaker wasn't an issue with the OP's restoration, nor is it relevant in this Success Story to discuss which other equipments may or may not have used such a 'speaker.
As pointed out by Nick in his post above, the matter is adequately discussed elsewhere so the Moderators have decided to operate the preset 'close' button on this thread. |
