that's a tricky one. What ever you attack it with may distort or melt the rexine . Nail varnish remover might shift it, but it wont be straight forward.

Sorry.

I don't think you'll get that paint off, and as you say there'll be a reason why it was painted in the first place. You'll need to live with it, paint it again, recover it, or use it as a donor set.

It all depends what it was painted with - a gentle experiment with cellulose thinners and/or Nitromore's in the most inconspicuous [very limited] location may be instructive. But .... as Bretski and Paul have intimated - you may well have to live with it.

N.B. Another issue is the matter of the rexine backing/padding/foam and timber cabinet sub-straite - the last thing that you want to do is damage or compromise those!

I would repaint. Thinners would be the obvious choice but that is likely to damage the material before the unwanted paint comes off.

That doesn't look like spray paint to me, the edge between the blue and black is too well defined and the wavy look has something of the hand done to it.
There were special dyes sold for shoes, to me it looks like it's something like that. If so I would try meths. Try a bit on the hidden edges. Other solvents to use are acetone (as has been suggested) or isopropyl alcohol.

I wonder if it was done by someone who just wanted to 'modernise' it? Black was a popular colour in the 80s.

Whatever the colour it's a very nice radio

No foam padding on the Democrat.

The stuff Hacker used is much more hardy than the usual Rexine used by most manufacturers - when cleaning sets I've used relatively harsh chemicals like IPA with no ill effect. No guarantees, of course, but not much to lose either...

It's worth sating that you had best keep acetone and IPA away from the other plastic parts like the tuning scale and knobs... just in case!

striped the radio and speaker out of case
And used Graffiti remover FX081250 to get most of it off then Xylene mixed with a dash off washing up liquid for the grained in bits

the blue covering looks to be in great condition

so in all a good result thanks to Hacker using a very durable covering

will need to stick the back edges down as they are now a bit loose and the grill will need a mask and respray
