Default A modern one, Q Acoustics Subwoofer

Hi all,

Now that my ex has moved out I have the run of the house. First job was getting the home cinema set up. Browsing eBay I chanced upon a Q Acoustics 1000 subwoofer described as faulty. Local pick up, I won it for £1.31 but gave the seller £5 as I felt a bit guilty!

Looking online it has decent reviews (originally part of a £500-ish speaker package). Externally very nice, solidly built with decent floor spikes, chunky connectors etc. Opened it up and basically a cheap and nasty horror show. The print on the PCB disintegrated when approached with the iron.

Long story short, 4 bad caps and 2 transistors (and quite a few solid TCW links) and it's alive. I must say that leaving the questionable built quality aside it performs very well indeed. Another box saved from landfill and a bargain for me

Cheers,

Kev

Well done! Even a modest sub-woofer can make a great improvement to any audio system. I've got a small Philips system and had to repair it recently, just a short-circuit electrolytic. Most people would chuck these things in a skip and buy a new one, whereas we can acquire and repair them for peanuts and enjoy good gear at really cheap prices.
