Indeed a nice set of pictures. Not sure about #6 being a commutator as described in the caption. Looks more like something from one of the diesels (as against the generators) you can see on the left of that picture and also in #7.

Hello there,
Number 6 is definatly not a commutator! It is a cylinder liner from one of the English Electric engines. The task it looks like they are undertaking is to use an internal micrometer to either check the overall internal diameter or to check for ovality in the bore. This task would be done at a major overhaul and is important to check wether the clearance between the piston and liner is within the designed wear limits. Notice the 2 lugs on the cylinder liner closest to the camera, these are to locate the liner in the right orientation when it is lowered into the block. The same principle was used on the early versions of the class 08 shunting locomotive engines also made by English Electric (6 RK series) Christopher Capener
