Default How Television Works

I've just watched this on Talking Pictures .

It's a really good, simple, explanation of how the picture gets from the studio to your Bush 22 (l think).

It's repeated at 5:45 AM on Thursday the 9 th. Of May

Default How Television Works

On Talking Pictures TV this morning was "How Television Works" a film from 1951. I don't think I have ever seen the basic principles of television so clearly explained. Even better, we see close-ups of the insides of a very new-looking Bush TV12, and there are also nice shots of an H aerial and a room scene.

This film will be repeated on Thursday morning at 5.45am.

Incidentally, 'Train of Events' - the 1949 film that includes a very realistic re-creation of television being made at Alexandra Palace, is coming up again on TPTV on Wednesday at 1215pm. This part of the film also includes a performance of the delightful 'Legend of Lancelot' by Leslie Bridgewater, for piano and orchestra.

I did do a quick scan to check before I posted, Kentode, but I can't see another thread. Maybe they could be combined?

Yes, the set in the film has the EF50 cans, and you are correct - no more ugly mug avatar.

Thanks for that info, hope this isn't straying too far from the subject but reminds me of a conversation with an old colleague, way back in the early days of camcorders, he'd had the big shots on a visit from Hitachi and was expressing some disquiet about servicing them, one of the Japanese reps replied by saying what you worried about?, camera only TV in reverse.

This was made by GB Equipments, another Rank company of course. I don't remember
RBM making a film about colour TV, but they did supply an educational pack of 35mm
colour slides with accompanying commentary on a set of 6 LP records to colleges etc.

From my position as an AP anorak it was nice to see the AP transmitter hall from another angle.

Watched it last night on the GEC and found it most interesting, the bit about the camera tubes was new information to me.

My 6 year old also found it interesting and seemed to instantly understand that this is how the telly that we were watching worked but not how the “proper telly” works because “all those things will not fit inside it”.

The version of the film as seen on TPTV actually has a few seconds from the front missing, where the title and a variety of television aerials are shown.

How do I know? I have an ex-VHS recording given me years ago. But otherwise the quality of the TPTV version is better.

I did notice it seemed to start rather abruptly, I just assumed my recorder had missed a few seconds for some reason.

This was directed by Frank Wells, son of H.G.Wells, and who also wrote the story of the
charming CFF film "Supersonic Saucer", a sort of E.T. prototype.

Perhaps you might consider ‘offering’ the missing few seconds to TPTV to complete their version?

I too saw that film and was really chuffed to see it was centered on a Bush TV12. I have a good working TV12 myself and will enjoy showing my friends & family the set showing the set so to speak!

Yes it was a great film, & the image & audio quality was very good.

However, when the description of how the camera & CRT scanning was described, I have to say that I could not stop laughing! Having attended & also run many training courses in the long-distant past, it was the first time I had ever heard someone describe the deflection/scanning of the electron beam as 'The electrons are sprayed...' (Obviously in sink...!).

Very innovative, I suppose as it (the film) was presumably aimed at Joe Public, the narrator/script writer chose 'sprayed' - instead of scanned.

Anyway it was a great piece of nostalgia for me, I hope TPTV manage to find some more gems like it.

David.
