Default McMichael 471 Restoration

This was my second restoration. It is a 5 valve inc power supply rectifier.

The transformer had a bad voltage change contact, the reservoir cap was really leaky. I fixed the contact and replaced the cap. So far so good.

On the main chassis, I found that most of the wax capacitors 0.1uF or higher were really leaky, so replaced those with new polyester ones. There is a screened (metalised) IF amplifier tube in there, which I found had lost it's screening, due to general rot. I found I was able to temporarily wrap it with aluminium foil, and earth, which worked!

The magic eye was pretty much worn out, which was a shame, as I was looking forward to seeing that in action.

I managed to find new old stock replacements for the EM34 magic eye and the EF39 tube.

So, with that lot in place, it was pretty much good to go.

I didn't do a lot with the cabinet, just a bit of danish oil, and I also tried to clean the speaker clock (damaging it in the process)

I'll have another go at the cabinet when I have time.

At the moment, I'm fairly happy with getting the electronics working.

Pictures attached

Cheers

Tam

Nice work. Grille cloth is a nightmare to get within these shores.
