Default Tascam Midistudio 688

Hi all,

I am attempting a repair of a Tascam Midistudio 688.

The problem seems to be that after a few seconds of playing the tape it abruptly stops. The belt was stretched so it has been replaced the rest of the mechanism has been cleaned and regreased yet the problem still persists.

Has anyone got any service data and schematics for this unit? Has anyone any experience of working on them?

Kind regards,
Tim.

I am not familiar with this particular unit, but the problem could be the autostop mechanism. Many decks rely on a sensor on the tape counter, it is usually caused by the counter belt stretching or breaking.

Many forms of autostop work by having some sort of switch actuated at each turn of the supply reel. As long as the switch is continually actuated the deck runs, but once it is interrupted for long enough a detector circuit triggers and stops the deck. Don't know if this is what's used in the 688 though, but it sounds like that type of mechanism given the time involved.

First things first:
- Is takeup smooth? No looping?
- Is the sound steady, no wow or flutter?
- Are wind/rewind functional?
- Does the shut off happen only at tape end or start, or at any point?
- Have you tried different tape lengths /brands?
