Default Marconi 911

Hi

Can anyone help with some advice.

Just bought myself a Marconi 911 and seems to be missing a knob or something on the side as I have the holes but it’s also not connected to anything inside? (see pictures)

Knob or vandalism?

Paul

I don't know if this will help give you a clue Paul. It is from the BVWS CD and states that the set should have three knobs.

Sadly the latter - I have one of these delightful sets and there isn't meant to be a hole there !
Probably the usual makeshift on off switch to circumvent a failed volume control, or perhaps a speaker switch ?
The knob above it is also incorrect

Thanks all for the information.

Andy, would you be able to take a photo of your knob, would like to compare with the one I have attached.

Sorry Andy, just realised that sounded a bit strange.

Could you take a photo of the knobs on your radio so I can compare with the one’s I have on my radio.

That’s better.

Thanks

Chortle ! Straight out of a Carry On movie - Ooh Matron

Anyway, pics as requested, in haste. Gives you the general idea. The 'volume knob' ( LHS ) has the word engraved into the face.

hope this helps

My set has had remedial work done I would guess in the 60s to get around an open field coil in the speaker.
It also had an open circuit MW coil and a duff IFT.
Not a great performer. The speaker is way too small for the cabinet.

Andy

PS Can you tell me the serial # of yours ? A/4 1xxxxx at a guess

Thanks for the info and pics Andy, very helpful. Looks like 2 of the tree knobs I have are wrong, ******.

Suppose you don’t know a good place to look for the correct one’s?

Please find a pic of the serial.

Make that 10. I've just found one in a bit of a sorry state in a bin in Bermondsey.

Case is smashed in half but the chassis looks intact, all valves present. Speaker ok too at first glance.

The chassis, valves and case had half-damp blue paint on them, cleaned most of it off and will start checking out the circuitry soon.

11 but mine doesn't have it's back.

It appealed to me because the Chassis is upside down.

I bought it in a mixed lot of sets around 1990.

I have seen 3 or 4 for sale on Ebay though over the last couple of years.

Cheers

Or about 13 unless you add a very detailed description of the label itself and its precise discolourations etc

Sadly my unit doesn't appear to have a serial number tag, otherwise I would gladly submit it.
The case (well, one half of it anyway) still has the label with the different valve positions etc.

It looks like the unit was switched on when it shouldn't have been as there are a few burnt looking wires and lots of insulation falling off. I spent a fair part of last night trying to sort out the mains transformer. The insulation on the fly wires had gone on every single one, so I cut the wires close to the transformer and soldered on new leads. It is by no means a work of art but I checked all the primary & secondary connections and they all seem ok! (The 'trader' sheet for this model is very helpful, it lists all the d.c. resistances for the taps.)
Next up I'm going to try reforming the can electrolytic and replacing all the other iffy wiring. Following that, I'll replace all the coupling caps and just try to get the amp bit working.

It is never going to be beautiful again (unless I can find a new case) but it might just sing.

The chassis has 18855 stamped on it, not sure if that is actually the serial number though.
