Default Tektronix 564 Allen Key Knob Size?

Hi all, I have started doing a rebuild on a 564 unfortunately I cant remove the knobs all my allen keys are to big. I will buy one if I know the size just didn't want to start buying random sizes in the hope of getting one that fits.
I don't seem to be able to find out anything about it, i'm sure some of you will know.

The correct size is 1/16 inch but 1.5 mm will probably do although slightly small. Use the imperial size if you can.

I have not got a 564 but other Tek scopes I have had used 1/16", imperial size allen keys it would be best to buy a set of the small size imperial keys of good quality. Cheap ones are often not hard enough or accurate enough and end up rounding off and damaging the grub screw.

1/8" and 5/64" UNC setscrews come to mind ...

Huge thanks for the reply's. I have a small imperial size set on order, not cheap ones as I also hate cheap tools. Just wanted to be sure I got the right size as I don't like rounding off heads.
I'm doing all the cold testing at the moment so fingers crossed the CRT works

Worth getting a small 1/4” nut spinner if you’re poking around inside Tektronix kit. Wera do a nice one. Best thing I’ve bought for a few years that is.

yes nut spinners are useful tools, I do have a few of them as sometimes trying to get a socket with extension bar in can be difficult.

Depending on it's condition, knobs on these can be a pain to get off even with the right key. Might be worth applying a drop of penetrating oil whilst your waiting for the keys to arrive.

That is true. Worst is if the unit has at some point been stored in a damp place with some rust in the threads. The 564 was introduced in 1963 and the last one came off the production line in 1970 (a 564B then lived on for a few more years), so those grub screws have been in those knobs for at least 48 years, and possibly 55 years. So use a tight fitting (imperial) allen key and go easy! If you round off the end of the grub screw it will spoil your day.

Been there

The outcome was basically "well I guess I'm going to have to put up with that cracked knob then"

I later found that a suitably picked Wera Torx screwdriver can be gently tapped into the top of the rounded grub screw (violating every known good workshop practice) to get them out.

A technique I have used with some success on stuck Allen grubscrews is a brief squirt of freezer spray into the hex head to break the bond between screw and threaded bush.

Thanks for the tip, have just put the scope on it's side so the grub screws face up and filled the holes with freeing oil. It will probably take more oil yet as some of the pots are pretty stiff, I can't even turn the astigmatism it is seized solid. Hopefully I will be able to get some oil down the shafts when the knobs are off.
I will give the freezer spray a try if I cant get the screws out.

The keys turned up unfortunately someone has already had a go at the astigmatism knob and it is pretty rounded off I managed to remove the others after about an hour of struggling with them.
The main reason I wanted to remove the knobs is to remove the front panel for cleaning and to free up the astigmatism pot. Fortunately I have managed to clean up the front without removing the panel and after spraying a little freeing oil into the pot it started to move and now it's free, after testing the pots they all check out crackle free
There is one grub screw that I cant tighten as it is slightly rounded off and It will round of completely if I try to tighten it, anyone know the thread size of these grub screws?

I don't know for sure, but I would imagine an American thread, if on an American scope.

West Brom Fasteners are good at supplying such things.

Or drop the knob up to me, in Oldbury, and I can have a look through engineers thread bible, or possibly find a grubscrew to match

Probably 4-40 unc. Easy to check as its the size of the screwlocks on RS232 D connectors.

Thanks for the offer Sid I will take you up on that if the CRT works as I'm waiting for a valve to come from Ukraine for it's power supply. If it has a faulty CRT it won't be worth me continuing. I will let you know when I know more.

I just took a look at an rs232 plugs locking screw unfortunately the grub screw is slightly bigger, It's a good thought and if it had been the same I could of just cut the tread bit off and put a slot on the end.

I checked the size of the grub screws in my Tek 502A this afternoon, they are #6 UNC (32 threads per inch). I think I may have the same problems removing some of them when I need to clean the front panel.

I think a 4-40 UNC grub screw takes a 0.050" allen key. A 1/16" key fits (amongst others, but this is the most common) a 6-32 UNC grub screw. I think 6-32 UNC screws were used to mount some types of disk drive, but alas other drives used other types of screws (including M3) so this is probably not a good way to work out what the grub screw is.

I guess you don't have a micrometer to measure the diameter of the oriignal screw or thread pitch gauges. If you do it would be quite easy to work out what you have.
