Default Dual helix wound coms wire

Years ago I watched a programme on T.V. which described a German communications system used in Normandy during WWII. It consisted of wires run in a helix (I think they were paired like a DNA stand) in a pipe. The diameter of the helix was approx 200mm and I am guessing the pitch to be in the region of 1 to 2 metres. I have since searched for any reference to this system without success. My question is, does anyone else remember this system and how did it work?
