Default Air Ministry Numbers.

Had this wooden trunk come my way, had been used as tool box noticed it's marked

AM 1A/3826

Is there a reference for these numbers to find out its origins?

Thanks.

That number is referred to as its 'Section Reference Number', and is the number that item was allocated in the RAF Stores system, so if you needed one it could be ordered.
The overall stores listing is contained in a document, A.P.1086, entitled 'Vocabulary of RAF Equipment'. It is split into numbered Sections, Section 1 being 'Hand Tools', and then 1A being 'Tools General'.
As can be imagined, a paper copy of A.P.1086 would occupy many feet of shelf space!
I have copies of various Sections, some as originals, some as photocopies and some as PDFs. Reference 1A/3826 is described as 'Box, Tool, Standard, Medium, without padlocks'.
In terms of finding out its origins, A.P.1086 won't help you any more, I'm afraid.

I keep a photograph record of AM-numbered items, is there any chance of a couple of photos showing the box and the number?

That looks remarkably like what was known in the Army as a Soldier's Property box.

When I first saw one it was being used to store pistols in an armoury but I understand that their intended use (in the Army at least) was to secure the property of soldiers taken into custody in a unit guardroom.
