Yes, the GU "Germanium hybrid" chassis version is technically very inferior to the A640 Silicon hybrid chassis

Thanks Paul, was just itching to know what the Televisor might make.

Re: ROYAL WOOTTON BASSETT SUN 2nd JULY!
I wonder was it a dealer or private collector who bought the Televisor,or maybe I should not ask.

Re: ROYAL WOOTTON BASSETT SUN 2nd JULY!
Heard a couple of people at the meet say it was a dealer, but cannot confirm. Some people there I spoke to expected it to reach £10,000 - £15,000.

Re: ROYAL WOOTTON BASSETT SUN 2nd JULY!
I am amazed at that price! Pre-war mirror-lids go for an average of £6k. I thought nearer £16k for the Televisor as the last two I heard of sold for over £14k. Someone got a good deal there - I hope, personally, that it wasn't a dealer and it that it stays in UK where it belongs.

Surprisingly there were no commission bids so bidding was just those in the room. Personally I was expecting it to be the other side of £10k, but that is just my speculation. The case was quite battered and had been repainted in the past which may have had an affect on prices. It would benefit from being carefully tidied up and resprayed, perhaps at somewhere that specialises in classic car bodywork. |

Re: ROYAL WOOTTON BASSETT SUN 2nd JULY!
I "rescued" a few £5 only bid bits and pieces, one of which was a Murphy B143 somewhat "dissed" by the auctioneer for its looks (I kind of agree) but I was somewhat cheered on opening it up to see a three gang tuning cap and five valves- yes an RF stage, no less. I wonder if it needed it to compensate for the metal box? Sometime I'll find out...... if there are any MW stations left by the time I get round to it.
A National T100 and a Roberts 505 as a pair for £5 was another interesting (and more surprising) win. Couldn't really tell how well the National works (too much QRM in my flat), I'll get a set of batteries and try it in the wild. It did hear a couple of stations an MW and a few more across its SW bands, though. The Roberts sort of works on FM but seems dead on AM. Maybe switch cleaner will help...... Missed out on a box of books- someone keener had also spotted "Radio Radio" and several volumes by GW Briggs in an unpromising looking pile, but did get the French "Phenix". Thanks for all the efforts on stage and off, I had "breakfast" (bacon sarnie) "lunch" (ham salad and sausage sarnies) and "tea" (remaindered egg mayonnaise and cut price ice cream) thanks to the kitchen crew.

Re: ROYAL WOOTTON BASSETT SUN 2nd JULY!
An old friend had her televisor stolen. It had sat on top of a display case in her shop for many years, until the shop was broken into. It was the target. Local legend had a price on it back in the eighties that had to be over ten times reality. Inevitably, you wonder where it is.

Re: ROYAL WOOTTON BASSETT SUN 2nd JULY!
It's a real shame that something as special as the Baird Televisor could not have been bought but the Museum at Dulwich, so it could be seen by the general public & maybe demonstrated.
I'm sure the museum doesn't have anywhere near the funds to purchase an item such as this, but I'm sure that if it was a classic painting, then the Heritage Lottery Fund would have helped. Maybe our vintage technology will attain the same status one day.....hopefully before it's too late. SimonT

Re: ROYAL WOOTTON BASSETT SUN 2nd JULY!
Another great event by the team.
Nice to see quite a few new faces as well as the "old lags" Like to thank everyone who supported the B&B on the day. It was brisk and there were many interesting items and some real bargains to be had. Looking forward to the December meet already Cheers Mike T

Re: ROYAL WOOTTON BASSETT SUN 2nd JULY!
I enjoyed helping with this auction because there was a good mix of varied lots - something for everyone. That does make it more interesting for us on the stage, and I'm sure for those watching and bidding too, than lots of 30's woodies.
We are always glad to have people like Herald1360 there to buy up the £5 sets that nobody else wants. As you said, we shouldn't ignore unassuming boxes! I bought a box of service data for £5 in the auction which nobody else wanted, even though I hadn't looked at it. From a quick flick through there are around 20 manuals I don't yet have, which will be scanned for the next DVD-ROM. |

It contained speakers, meters including an Avo 8, lots of knobs, a huge bag of 1/4" chassis jacks, and lots of other useful bits. An absolute bargain. Strangely, I was in front of the gentleman in the queue waiting to pay, who submitted this lot, and he was lamenting on how cheap it went for! Oh well.......... SimonT

Re: ROYAL WOOTTON BASSETT SUN 2nd JULY!
Well done Simon! It's worth taking a gamble sometimes, especially at that sort of money.
There were a lot of boxes piled up in the middle of the stage, and I don't know whether many people actually looked through them. We need a bigger stage to put it all on, though I think the available space does set the limit at 300 lots which is probably enough for all of us. If sellers don't want their items to sell to cheaply they should set realistic reserves, at the absolute minimum they would accept. Of course they may end up taking things back home instead then. |

Re: ROYAL WOOTTON BASSETT SUN 2nd JULY!
Hi,
I bought the other new-in-box Radio 1 ‘FM’ radio on Neil’s stall. I kept looking at it and it just seemed too good to pass it by. I suppose it has a little more interest in view of the 50th anniversary of Radio 1 in September, anyway I’ll put it with my Radio 1 ‘FM’ 21st birthday single. Terry |

Re: ROYAL WOOTTON BASSETT SUN 2nd JULY!
It was a good day, lots of quality items, hats off to all the staff that work so hard to make this event such a good one. I only made one purchase throughout the day, some Dekatron tubes off the bring & buy for a fiver.
I ended up with 4 x GC10B neon tubes and 1 x GC10B Argon filled tube. I cobbled together a little circuit to test the "B's" and they look quite interesting if nothing else. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBZmfmIxx_4 Cheers

Re: ROYAL WOOTTON BASSETT SUN 2nd JULY!
Another enjoyable day meeting up and having a chat with like minded people. The catering was to the usual high standards and a big thank you to Mike and his team for making the day go so well.
The auction was very interesting and am glad that the three dual standard black and white tellies found good homes. I came away with a very tidy Roberts R500, A Roberts RFM3 and a Philips some/square wave generator all nice and small so I could sneak them into the house and hide them when no one was looking.

Re: ROYAL WOOTTON BASSETT SUN 2nd JULY!
Although I could only manage a few hours at the meet and so missed the auction, I had a jolly good time there. Thanks to Mike and the other members of the gang who put on a super show which was very well worth visiting, even for the short time I could manage.
My financial expenditure was very small, £3.00, for three knobs and two ancient AVO test probes! I have omitted the expenditure on two bacon and egg sarnies (They're the only reason we come, if the truth be known). Anyway, thanks to the organisers for a super show and Sarah and I look forward to the next. |
