Bakelite 232 mk1 and bellset 31
I'm trying to wire the above 2 together; the bellset came pre-installed with a line cord with modern colours. The instructions I found online results in no dialling tone or response from the receiver. I've used a line cord (is this suitable) to connect the phone to the bellset thus:
T1 to B7 T2 to B1 T3 to B4 Line cord: White/blue trace B9 Orange/white trace B7 Strap between B7 B8 Resistor between B9 and E Can ring phone from mobile and rings but no change when receiver lifted. Can't ring out. Phone itself works perfectly when bellset removed but obviously no ring sound. Any guidance gratefully received. |

Re: Bakelite 232 mk1 and bellset 31
For starters, those colours are unusual for a line cord. They sound more like those for fixed wiring. Assuming, however, that the standard assignments for fixed wiring have been used:
blue/white = A leg white/blue = B leg orange/white = ring white/orange = spare ... there seems to be no mention of a connection to the B leg of the line (needed by the telephone, but not by the ringer). Please note that you will only be using the ringer in the bellset 31, which is intended for use with telephones that don't have their own induction coil. Looking at diagram N531 for bellset 31, the ringer is connected between BE and B7, so (for the time being) I would be inclined to remove the resistor and move white/blue (ring wire) from B9 to BE, leaving B9 (not otherwise connected to anything) free to connect blue/white (B leg of line) via B9 to T3 in the telephone, then connect B7 to T2 and BE to T1, so in summary: white/blue to BE blue/white to B9 white/orange (if present) remain unconnected orange/white to B7 (as at present) BE to T1 B7 to T2 B9 to T3 If you find that you do need to have a resistor in series with the ringer, then either one end will need to be connected to the orange/white wire free-standing, or the blue/white wire connecting on to T3 will need to be free-standing, with the connections as you originally had them to BE and B9 - as Bellset 31 only appears to have a single spare terminal.

Brilliant, all working fine now, many thanks. Fair bit of acoustic shock with this, I take it a rectifier can be fitted across the handset as usual, which numbers does it go across on this?

Re: Bakelite 232 mk1 and bellset 31
If fitted, the "rectifier 205" goes between the red and green (receiver) wires of the handset. The former is T5 and the latter is either T6 (1/232) or T8 (232). This telephone, however, would not originally have been fitted with a rectifier.
By the way, it's good to know that your 'phone is now working.

If I remember right the bellset no 31 has an induction coil, and so does the 232, that may make a mismatch.

Re: Bakelite 232 mk1 and bellset 31
As per the wiring instructions I gave, the OP is only using the bell from the BS13, whose induction coil is not in circuit.

Not being pedantic, Dave, just thought the OP might like a bit of info, that possibly came from the same school as you.
For the OP- there's a master list of diagrams for telephones (unfortunately can't find any reference to bell sets) called N diagrams. In the case of most phones, the diagram is 100 added to the phone number. e.g. for tele 232 the diagram is 332. |

In the case of bellsets, add 500, so the N-diagram for BS31 is 531, as referenced in my earlier post.

Re: Bakelite 232 mk1 and bellset 31
Ok rectifier fitted and acoustic shock vastly reduced. Many thanks for all input.
